Aronian was consistently world #2, went to multiple candidates tournaments, and his peak rating is above Naka's peak ... unfortunately Aronian always preformed disastrously bad in the candidates... maybe his nerves got to him.
But he's not on the list at all either.

And unlike Nakamura actually earned a world championship match (against Kasparov... which Kasparov ignored and played Kramnik instead #chessdrama).
So why isn't Shirov on the list?
Oh that's right, he's not some social media papega like Hikaru is...
Oh and speaking of matches with Kasparov, Nigel Short played one, and it was wall to wall coverage in the UK. So Short popularized the game for his country for a whole generation of players and played at the highest stage Naka never got to... but he's not on the list at all either, hmm.
