Disparate Rapid and Blitz Ratings

I have noticed that some opponents have what seems like impossible gaps between their rapid and blitz ratings.
For example, today one opponent had a 1700's Blitz rating and an 1100's Rapid rating. I get that some players are better at one or the other, but a 600 point difference just doesn't seem possible to me.
What am I missing?
