Distractions

Hey all, let's list all of the things that used to distract you in OTB tournaments (of course, we don't have those right now), or just while you're playing chess online! I'll get us started tongue.png

1. Disputes

2. Crying Baby

3. The spectator who leans over your shoulder to look at your scoresheet

4. A fly flies over the chess board and doesn't leave

What about you guys? Do those things distract you? If not, what else do you think is distracting?

Note: Please don't give me any hate for this, I am just trying to start a friendly conversation. I'm not trying to offend anyone. happy.png

The spectator who makes facial expressions that are suggesting if you are making a blunder or not

I have breathed in some bad smells during a chess tournament game.  This invariably disturbs my concentration.

1.My dad

2.when the board next to me has an interesting game.
3.That's about it. I really don't mind loud noises since It can annoy my opponent but not me.

My own nerves are distracting

jay_1944

When my opponent doesn't place their pieces in the center of the square! They got all their pieces sloppy as can be, hanging over the edge of the squares... this drives me nuts Lol

Serious question if anyone actually knows the answer... In competition, can I say "I adjust" and adjust my opponent's piece???

Hydromamma

Lol, i agree with everyone, but also I think when I'm online, it's mostly me accidentally looking at their blitz and getting super intimidated sometimes. idk

Talk to any really strong player and he'll say "Distraction? What distraction? I don't get distracted"

jay_1944

I dunnnnno about that  Haha  Some of the strongest players are the worst for complaining about distractions in their playing environments. I know Fischer was known for being very picky about perfect playing conditions as one example.

You can adjust ANY piece on the board, yours or your opponent's, but only on your time

I remember during the candidates the players were complaining about Kramnik's shoes being very squeaky during games, and he would walk around a lot.  Lol true story!

I remember in one of my first tournaments I adjusted my piece on my opponent's time, and he screamed "DON'T ADJUST ON MY TIME". I learned my lesson lol.

Okay thank you chessdude! I honestly wanted to ask about that before playing an OTB again.

jay_1944

Lol rukja! Oops. Wont forget now anyways haha.

The only distracting thing is when someone else take more than 30 seconds of their time by move 7.

Like seriously learn some opening theory, we don't want to sit here to be stuck on openings
