DO ALL GAMES HAVE TO BE TIMED ONLINE

I can think of a rational reason that shouting (unnecessarily) should be socially unacceptable.  Generally, it's either a sign of agression or is used to alert others to danger.  In the case of agression the reason for its social unacceptability is obvious, however in terms of alerting others to danger, yelling unnecessarily and to excess in this context eventually causes complacency about it and can put the group at greater risk as they cease to heed the warnings.

Yeah, that is why in hindsight I tried to back off of that one but was too lazy to rewrite my post.  You can also argue that using all caps is often used for emphasis, like boldface.  It is a very rare instance when an entire paragraph needs emphasis.

Proper capitalization seems to be tricky.  I may just start ending every post with "sorry i'm annoying and too lazy/innept to capitalize" which would be faster, especially with the advent of copy/paste.  :).

At the end of the day I am new and felt the response I have had has been rude and unkind unworthy of rational people. I have attempted to make my point. If in this modern age younger people take exception to 2 lines of caps couched in a friendly and help seeking fashion bearing in mind opening caption on rules is be nice and have fun? well I dont know where we go from here.  I remember playing chess as a small boy with my father and grandfather.  I have not played for years 40+ and have never played to a clock and a time all I am interested in is a little fun on computer because I dont enjoy TV and try to keep my mind ticking over. Frankly the thought of anybody being so arrogant and impolite and blaming 2 lines of caps for same is beyond all bounds of known reality for me.  Nothing in my life experience has taught or prepared me for this.  Perhaps though at end of day I should not bother and in a roundabout way you are right.  I does not however mean that some of you are not rude and unfriendly in my book.

cynnyc,  psychiatry and personal judgments aside, most people do find the all caps posts annoying and they are regarded as shouting.  dana is certainly not the only one on the site that will mention it.  shrug, so take that for what it is worth.

@planeden Are you aware that writing a lower-case-only post on the internet is regarded as lazy? Most people will find it kinda annoying and/or will think that you are a little bit immature.

A backhanded jab at Erik and 'flags, methinks.

I think proper punctuation on the internet is regarded as a sign of age and hubris.Tongue out

Typing in all caps is rude.  It's harder to read, and it signfies shouting.  That's not something that people at chess.com came up with, it's standard on the internet, no matter where you go.

I answered your questions, and all you did from there was to troll and troll some more.  Incredibly rude.

No worries.  I won't be helping you if I see you post another question. I don't think you play chess, I think you are just a 10 year old who likes to troll online.

So the irony of posting in caps is that people find it rude and point out that it's rude, which isn't rude to do, because it wasn't posted in capsLaughing

CYNNYC

you see there you go again blatantly rude and abusive but its plain to see its easy to be so on the internet there is no comeback other than words and no stick or stone could be thrown. So long dear.

it seems that you have gotten the answer to your question.  and, now you have triggered a debate about the nature of the internet and its role in society.  quite an accomplishment really.  usually you just get one or the other.  of course, i may be one that is considered rude and unfriendly.  if only i could learn to keep my trap shut.

for what it is worth, i will still try to answer your questions.  but it probably wont be worth much because i am kinda dumb and tend to give wrong answers.

People with caps asking about cap size...

Friend all I wanted to do was ask a simple question, and get a simple answer.  Aye or no?

What I got was, [I presume is there for all to see ] and I take exception to being treated so.  It was never my intention to spark any conflict or debate about anything, such has never been my way.  I just cannot see that my one and only question 2 lines of text in capitals could lead to such a laughable situation whether or not its written in caps. Who made this rule? where is it written and by what idiot and worse how many sheep follow??? Its synonymous with a common, disinterested and unintelligent herd instinct.  I tend to expect more from people I call friends.

And by the way its not written in the chess rules that though shalt not use caps as far as I could see!

I do apologise to all sensible and logical people for my rant but ye gods its madness.

i find the more expect this, and the more you laugh at it, the better the internet is.  and to think, enistein found the infiniteness of stupidity before the internet even existed.  so far ahead of his time.

I agree with you on this in so many ways. To many people just follow without thinking. In this case I think it is a matter of human nature for most people. Have you ever read a novel where the author writes in all caps? Almost always it is because one of the people are shouting. I think this may play a part (not the only reason but at least part of it) in way people think you were shouting. I'm not saying this is the way it should be, but the way it is.

Writers, editors, and compositors discovered many generations ago that all-caps could be used to emphasize a word or two. People who sought to be irritating discovered some time later that they could write in all caps. Until the internet came along, however, these folks could not find an audience.

Baldr

Of course, I answered your question. I didn't complain about the caps. You said nothing about it, and started ranting about how everyone here is rude.

As to who created the "Posting in all caps is rude" thing, it's not any one person, it just developed.

From : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_caps

With the advent of the internet, all caps in messages became closely identified with "shouting" or attention-seeking behaviour and is considered very rude. As a result, netiquette generally discourages the use of all caps when posting messages online. While all caps can be used as an alternative to bolding for a single word or phrase, to express emphasis, repeated use of all caps can be considered "shouting" or irritating.
