Do board themes affect your performance?

I perform significantly worse when playing on Lichess and when I change the board theme to something else on Chess-dot-com. I also find that other people play with different board themes all the time without affecting their performance. Is it just me having some sort of placebo effect?

Maybe placebo. Maybe you're distracted or disoriented by the unfamiliar visual representation.

I don't think so, if the board is different it directs your attention (even if it is only sub-conscious) away a little bit. This means calculation could be slower or you could miss simple tactics until you get used to it. Try to find similar board themes on both sites so there isn't as much of a difference. Completely normal.

hello Olivia !   ... well i doesn't think the board themes will affect greatly your performance .            in fact i think the most important thing is : to choose a board theme than you are confident with.   doesn't really matter if it is : Blue/white ... or pink/white squares. you can do how you like !          otherwise i will advice you not to choose colors that can tiredness your eyes sight or even            worst : blur the diagonals. also : always remember the most important thing is to enjoy your            gameplay !                                                                                                                                            Good night Olivia or have a good day with the time zone.                                                                your friend : aqua.

I tend to do better when the pieces don't blend into the board.

for some people like me, it helps with my "vision" and makes things easier to process and focus

Hi Olivia. Sometimes, the color is one distraction

It doesn't just happen to you. It depends on the strategy you have in mind. my strategy is to interrupt my opponent's movement regardless of the color of the board. I don't think about winning, but I try to put myself in my opponent's place and truncate his game by knocking down his most important pieces one by one.

I have dealt with visualization issues from certain color matches between board and pieces. I prefer chess com over all the others! Could be biased though since I have been with them since 2014! But I deff have notice diff In my visualization depending on the color n piece match up!

For me it does affect my play a lot

Are you talking about the clash royale bots?? That board is awful

Avatar of ChessMasteryOfficial

Finally enough, yes. I guess when you feel positive about your board theme, you play better.

Some board and pieces setups are just bad, because it isn't as clear as other set-ups. I'm surprised by the objectively bad setups some people choose.
