Eh. I doubt it. Maybe, though.
Do chess players have better IQ?

I already started a thread like this called Chess and IQ relationship
I know, but your thread is about "can chess increase IQ ?" I ask diferent questions...

It is a stereotype that chess players are intelligent.
And why...
Umm 'cause it is a stereotype? Stereotypes don't really have much solid background or reasons.

A lot of people who play chess like to think they have higher IQs or are somehow smarter or more logical than most others. They aren't.

I think the average chess player is probably slightly more intelligent than the average person, because a lot of people probably come to play on chess.com after beating their friends & family at chess. However, I don't think the difference is that big. Maybe 5 points or so.

I think that intelligent people are more likely to be attracted to a mind-sport than other people. So I'd assume that their average intelligence is higher. Not because they play chess but because their higher intelligence led them to playing chess.

Chess players like to think of themselves as being superbrains, but most non-chessplayers think of them as socially retarded, hygienically challenged nutjobs. A better question is: Why are smart people geeks?
Of course chess players have a higher IQ .
To play chess requires a lot of brains. People who don't play chess are teh stupit.

Well put!

I think people who do not play chess think chessplayers are smarter than average.
Chessplayers know better.
Why?
Because we are smarter.
Catch 22.

Fact 1. If one uses their brain on anything considered a novelty it has been scientifically proven to increase neuro-plasticity (higher IQ essentially), however the novelty of it (whatever "it" is) wears off after its no longer new or fresh so therefore discontinues the increase in pascticity.
Fact 2. Chess will help the brain early in the day (after a few games or tactical puzzles) get the neurons firing but only if in moderation.
Fact 3. Many of the top GM's of all time have reportedly had an IQ well over the genious level. (Polgar, Fischer, Kasparov and on and on...)
Fact 4. Low IQ people dont bother with games involving critical thinking so this lends itself to the hypothesis that only hight IQ people can play it. (falicy/not true)
Fact 5. I would go out on a limb and say that in my fifteen years in the chess community the overwhelming majority of folks I've encountered have been high IQ...even those who I played alongside while being temporarily detained in a city jailhouse (predominately low IQ folks congegate there)
In summary...Yes and No..most do but not all do

There have been very few examples of idiot savant type of chess people, at least at the higher levels of chess achievement. Just don't know why. There were idiot savants who were great mental calculators, who have photographic memories etc. Why is chess an exception in this respect ?

The concept of "intelligence" is rather broad, as it includes not only the critical thinking, forethought and memorization required by chess, but also certain concepts not utilized in the game, such as extrapolation from known variables into "educated guesses." While you cannot necessarily say that all chess players are smarter than non-chess players, it is without a doubt certain that the average intelligence of devoted chess players is higher than the rest of the public. Not to be elitist, but there is a correlation, as I said, in critical thinking, forethought and memorization, and perhaps crucially, the time-limitation element requires training of certain aspects of the brain that concern immediate access to knowledge and data, things of this nature. Statistically speaking, chess players are significantly more intelligent that the average public. Congratulations. I'll prepare your certificate.
What is your IQ? What do you think would be the IQ of the promedium regular ches player ? The overall population promedium IQ is 100 if I'm not wrong. I'm not sure but I wouldd say that in general, people who play chess regulary keep their brain more active than other people, because chess requires to think logically. What do you think...?
