Do high testosterone levels improve performance?

As a female, I sometimes wonder whether I would play a more aggressive game if I had the advantage males have with their androgen and testosterone hormones, what do you think?

Ha ha ha fantastic question, but I do not know, my main hobby is judo, I have a black belt nidan now working as a coach, so I had a classmate in the club which lack the aggressiveness did not even think they were more aggressive than me, certainly in this sport has discrepancy with regard to strength, and as in chess that, no, I do not see the difference, warm cordial greeting .............................. ......

So even though you are not sure, it would appear that in judo a more aggressive approach is very helpful, wouldn't that then also apply to chess? Testosteone is the hormone that fuels aggression. Guys have plenty of that, it's unfair.

What kind of performance are you talking about?!

Enough testosterone will allow you to scratch your beard while thinking. It is a well known fact that scratching your beard improves your game. My decision not to shave has been by far the best step in my chess career so far. With less testosterone I would be still rated below 1000.

Do men have an advantage in chess? Arguably they do. Is it because they naturally play more aggressively? I don't think so.

Firstly, I don't think that men do play more aggressively. If anything, I would say the opposite. But that is neither here nor there because I don't think that playing more aggressively is an advantage. You should look to play very actively, not very aggressively. In my opinion.

So that's why I mentioned the example of my colleague women contestants who have phenomenal aggressiveness, some level of cruelty, is such a sport, so even though I have 110kg, and I've always been in the heavyweight division, I used them admired the courage and aggressiveness , as in chess there is no difference in physical strength, then I think, and I met with such rivals from the "gentler" sex that aggressiveness is not missed, and I know now and such, but it is already in the sphere of psychology and character of the person with whom game, that's my opinion, a sincere heartfelt greeting to my friend .................................... PS I would ask you to open the Chat where we play a game, I have an interesting music video, do you love acoustic guitar if I'm not mistaken ........................ ....

High testosterone does not help in actually winning the game. It may help to irritate opps who allow this. But the moves win the game, not the agression.

Knowledge, concentration, calculation skills, flexibility, sensitivity, fitness, creativity, psychology.

These are factors that really help.

Also, the dude who is agressive wastes more power than the dude who is just calm and sensitive. So, against an agressive player i would not try to win, instead i would just search for sound looking moves. Just keep the game going going going. Wait until the agressive dude wants to much and overlooks my resources.

Yes some very well thought out comments, I just want to also say that if a woman is an excellent chess player, plus also intelligent and very skilled at the game, a little bit of testosterone would also give her that extra edge of advantage, she could then be like a guy, who intimidates his opponent and puts him off his stride, how can anyone be calm and collected when you know your opponent is utterly furious with you ...

ButWhereIsTheHorse

Yeah definately relies on your ability to move the chess pieces

Ellie47

... ability to move your chess pieces correct, AND the right body chemisty! For example not intoxicated with anothing other than the correct levels of adrenaline and testosterone.  I am not being silly here, I actually think the reason why there are more male players than females is because men love a battle, how many female Generals do you know?

are you talking about chess or...what?

I think that you're getting your wires a little crossed here, Ellie. Perhaps your thoughts are consistent but your words aren't.

The thread title asks if testosterone improves chess ability, but your opening post states that it does, as if it was an undisputed fact, and then asks an entirely different question about aggression. Your latest post puts forward another opinion of yours regarding why you believe there to be more male chess players, as though the comment was directly relevant to the discusion.

I think that you need a bit more consistency.

Do you hold a PhD, Caineghis?!

If this were the case, steroids would be used to enhance chess performance instead of caffeine and pep pills. Hou Yifan probably has all the testosterone of a butterfly, yet she is easily better than most every boy here.

Game-of -Pawns, ... please! I am not writing a thesis, I am just tossing ideas around.  No harm in that!  I am famous for my inconsistency, that's what makes me unpredicatable and dangerous on the chess board :))))

Ellie47
