Does anybody know, I am broke, my parents are broke, I simply can't do what you suggest, i.e. Join a club, get lessons, etc. So, what can I do besides lose. By the way i am temporarily 1150😩

There are many free resources to help you improve. For tactics training  try chesstempo.com. There are also many instructive youtube videos. Try looking at videos of Matojelic,Kingcrusher, Seirawan etc.

There are also good articles here at chess.com.

I remember that night, we met some humble girls!

StephenCorelli

You can doubt that I am broke, but that doesn't make me any richer. Lol

StephenCorelli

Thanks for the suggestions.

BronsteinPawn

I would suggest you to study.

I thought the same you thought when I was a teen, I thought I would become World Champion or a very strong player and that I would live of all my money gathered in books royalties, tournaments etc...

Look at me now, I am a 60 year old dude in New Zealand that posts photoshopped images and is battling to get the 1 point needed to get into 1900s land in blitz.

I believe most people have the potential to reach an 1800 rating even if they're broke. You don't need books or lessons. You need a passion for playing, a willingness to work on your game, and access to opponents who are rated a few hundred points above you.

Don't get me wrong, books and lessons can be very helpful. However, they're not necessary, at least not until you're way stronger than your current rating.

NO

False.

BronsteinPawn

Not false, it is pretty close to reality, he could maybe become an FM

aidan0816

Close to true is still false.  This isn't horse shoes or heart surgery.  Being "close" isn't good enough.

BronsteinPawn

Can I become a god? By your logic I could.

Could I beat Magnus in 10 classical games match tomorrow? By your logic I could.

The dude is already 14 and his ratings are not even 1200, he says he is broke which means no coach, no books, etc...

He should concentrate right now in studying and getting a job so he can live happily and once he is stable in the economic part pursue his goal on chess improvement, he may even become an FM which is already a great achievement.

I don't think anyone suggested that it is likely to happen.  It probably won't.  'no' isn't the correct answer though, but I do concede it may be a little closer to the truth than 'yes'.

maybeprobablynotconfirmedbutprobablycloserthatyesthanno

is that the word your looking for?

No

imfabulus21

I do

StephenCorelli

Well and thank you. I would be happy f I was an FM, but I am hoping for GM

StephenCorelli
I just beat a 1230. Yippee
StephenCorelli

It was a mistake for me to play 18...Qa4+, I could have played 18...Qxa2, far better, but I simply did not see it at the time. I discovered the better replacement while analyzing the game with my father. I am very happy with the winning sacrifice of the bishop. I am till convinced that I won the game only due to my opponents mistake of advancing his queen out too early. I didn't want to play my knight twice in the opening, but it was necessary.

Good luck to you, though.

Read Chess: 5334 Problems, Positions, and Games by Polgar over and over.   It is one of the few books you need for mastery.

When I used to counsel students at a community college, I would get kids straight out of high school who would proclaim, "I want to get a Ph.D."  To which I would reply, "Fine. Start with an associates degree, then a Bachlors, the a Masters or combined Masters/Doctoral program and you will get one!"

...as you climb to the top, the rungs are farther apart...condiser playing Texas Hold'em...there is more money in it.

You seem uniquely unqualified to comment on this.  Also...the wrungs on education do not get further apart.  They are about 2 years apart (associates, bachelors, masters, phd).

The time frame involved, is not the same as the effort involved.
