No. But when I go to my girlfriend's place she tends to give me a rather angry look if she sees me playing chess on her computer.

philidorposition

I had a very close friend that reacted to my indulgence with chess like "chess??? why on earth spend time on something like chess!??"

I've ended my relationship with that person.

InEngland chess players are nerds and geeks

Murrrrr

Never ever make fun of geeks or nerds. They shall rule the world!!!

Oh and no. They don't make fun of me, but they don't see why I play it.

mattattack99

No. I'm the reason all of my friends play chess. In the first grade they saw me playing against a teacher and got jealous.

otherdog

I was forced to take up karate after my friends discovered i played chess.

I've never been made fun of, though it's usually because their either know me and think it somehow means I actually am a genius instead of some guy with a good memory, or they're too intimidated by my size to say anything.

otherdog

My chess coach told me to carry a knife at all times

chry3841

yes they do sometimes and it isn't somrthink that bothers me much.

it's like saying somethink to someone who plays soccer or baseball: it's a passion and a game I love: other can say what they want, I won't stop.

real friends won't say you anythink

GrantZierer

I try not to talk about it. But I really don't care altogether.

electricpawn

People don't, but the pieces are another matter entirely. The bishops can be particularly condescending. E_O, you must have enough angst for three people.

I used to go sit and play at restaurants during lunch. I'd unroll my tournament set, and play through master games (that I printed at the office beforehand) while I ate. You think people look at you funny for playing chess... go play chess by yourself in public. You definitely get some looks. That and jackasses wandering by and saying "Hey, who's winning?" every so often.
