Explain what you mean by squares on the snooker table.
Perhaps its the positions, and all out warfare that emerge from those 64 squares is what drives us to play (and improve).
Although, I do feel Bobby Fischer was a little too into chess...

Yes, even more then you might think. Recently in my town, a guy that used to play his two buddies on a park bench took drawing a won game way too seriously. He first had a row, then got into a fight with his opponent and lost that as well. Then he went home, took his rifle, came back to the park and shot him.
I wish I was making this up...
I'm not sure what you mean by obsessed with Chess. I admit to being addicted to chess, and I think do think a lot of people take Chess seriously. My understanding of what your saying is, and plaese correct me if I'm wrong. Sometimes, a few people who are albeit clever players, and players who have learnt a lot about the game, do get a bit above their selves. Full of their own importance. Imagining they are better than a person who is only just learning or doesn't know as much about the game.
The best Chess players, are people like Bill Wall, Erik, and lots of other players on this site, who love the game so much they want others to learn and enjoy the game as much as they do. Bill Wall imparts his wealth of knowledge on this site freely, which is a wonderful thing to do.
Erik, and others provide this site to us for free. OK, I hopeone day it makes them super rich, and why not?
Yet we have people on this site who are so full of themselves, they complain constantly. Their opponant isn't playing fast enough---- Is my opponant cheating? ------ My opponant won't resign ------- Yet I am winning????
Is this what you mean by being too serious? If yes I think you mean are they too full of themselves.
If so yes I agree with them I want to shout, "So what get over it"?
I'm not a very clever player yet I have played with some fantasic and clever opponants. Who have shown the upmost understanding of my not being as clever or as quick as them. Yet never once have any of them (and they know who they are, Thank you all of you). complained to me.
I think I'm better off playing chess than wasting my time watching rubbish sit-coms and soaps on the TV like most people do.
People have a problem when they become obsessed with chess rather than enjoying it. But you enjoy it more with more knowledge, so its kind of addictive!
Do some people take chess too seriously?
Yeah, like that Kramnik guy. Takes it way to serious. I mean, goodness gracious.

Sorry, I don't understand this part. Surely someone who has learnt a lot about the game is better than someone who is just learning or doesn't know much. There's no imagining about it. Of course that isn't to say that the person learning can not become better.

Don't get me wrong, chess is a fantastic game to play and I wish I was a better player, but some people get a little obsessed with it. At the end of the day there are only 64 squares on a chess board. If you compare it with a game such as snooker (an English game), when you are involved in a tactical battle on a snooker table there is almost an infinite number of squares. Maybe I am talking rubbish but that is what I believe.
