In Bali I found a taxi stand on the side of the road where two of the drivers were playing chess while waiting for customers.
After their shift they left the chessboard and pieces right there next to the road.
I asked them if they were not worried it would get stolen but they assured me the set was safe seeing as nobody knew what it was used for.
We might therefor conclude that there are 2 people who play chess in SE Asia possibly as much as four.
I have recently returned from my fact finding mission in South-East Asia four months ago.
It has taken me this long to decide whether I should share my findings with a community who cannot handle the truth and is generally made up of the ignorant ,argumentative and general riff-raff.
If Eric did not promise me a diamond membership for my selfless efforts I probably wouldn’t be writing this report.
The question of course was: Do South-East Asians play chess?
And the short answer for the benefit of the Google generation with no attention span is ‘ no, they do not’
(By SE Asia I mean true SE Asia, not India, Vietnam, Japan or any other non SE Asian country.)
My mission started in Indonesia, the purest SE Asian country.
I literally searched everywhere for anybody that plays chess....in bamboo forests, remote beaches, tiny market towns, crowded cock fighting arenas but could not find a single person who even knew what chess was.
Finally in Java I found a tiny restaurant with some chess sets for hire.
The joint was completely empty.
The owner explained that he used to do roaring trade until he introduced the chess sets and now he is bankrupt.
Although he spoke to me in his own language I could tell what he meant from his facial expression and body language.
