Im 16 and thinking of going for my first rating tournament end of this year. How should I prepare?

I suggest you to play long time control games and analyze the games with the opponent and witha study partner ot coach and with a chess engine. I suggest you also to add new pieces to your knowledge by studying from books, videos, articles and study from a chess coach!

Thanks alot! Surely planned to take your coaching after exams done :)

Is there any way to determine one's style or preferred way of playing without having to shell out lots of money for lessons?

How does one determine to learn, say, the QGD, the KID, or the Grunfeld?

I've been playing over the games of Petrosian; and occasionally the author makes the point that a Capablanca would probably play thusly, whereas a Petrosian would choose another move.

And Fischer played the KID very differently from Kasparov.

How does one find, as objectively as possible, one's chess style?

Does it consist of a feeling of empathy for a player whose games one is playing over? Or an unarticulated sense that one opening is beyond one's capabilities?

Which opening suits me? I play Sicilian as black. I play Italian as white. How would you suggest which openings should I play?

I suggest you to replay annotated master games of lot of different openings and by time you will feel a calling from the opening you need to play. You will enjoy to study them, you will feel energized. Then you found your openings.

Thanks a lot master!

Hello mr attilaturzo ,do you recommend any chess book for beginners?

What are your thoughts on the Scheveningen variation of Sicilian from black perspective.?

I played that when I was beginner and in the first years of my chess life. I enjoyed it very much. It gave sharp, tactical battles, most of the time focusing on the king. You should be quick in the attack and use your pawns to storm the white queenside!

somebody said : standard chess for scientist, both blitz and bullet are for athlete and artist, do you agree..?

Yes, I think when we play standard chess we have time for analysing the situation deep like a scientist, in blitz and bullet games we need to be quick like in an athletic tournament and use our intuition, what artist use in the process of creating art.

I am not the best chess player as you can see but often if i get to play against a 2000+ rated player in a long time control i often manage to win or draw with almost never any blunders but when i play a 1500- i get totally chrushed why?

Possible you sense the danger of losing when you play with a high rated player and it helps you to focus your energy. When you play against lower rated players, you may be overconfident and have less focus

At my level do whats the best option: 1. Study tactics 2. Study Endgames 3. Study Openings 4. Kick all out and hire a coach to take care of everything

Is it a realistic goal to become a titled player if you started playing seriously when you are 25 years old? Or is it too much unless you started young and have an exceptional talent?

If it is possible, how much time should I study per week to achieve this goal?

I think it is possible and I suggest to study at least 7 hours per week.

Is this opening workable?

Yes. 3..Be6 is playable, but I think Nc6, Be7, Nf6 is better, because it prevents white quick attack.

How many pizzas should I eat before (and during) a tournament game?

I suggest to eat one pizza and at least 2 hours before the game, so in the game your blood can serve your brain instead of the stomach. During the game I suggest you to drink 100% fruit juice or fruits.

atilla du you know about any good ways to study endgames online

I'm afraid about what happened to my brain's Chess engine! 3-4 days ago I was at 1665 and now I'm 1551 rated in standard Chess. I suddenly started loosing games. 5-6 days ago, I was playing very confidently against 1650-1720 rated opponent and was holding a nice position and now I'm so frequently loosing from ~1400/~1500/~1550 rated. what happens in my games is, my opponent is trying simple tactics and I'm defending and defending and loosing pieces one by one. Any ideas on what should I do?

Thank you for posting this forum IM Turzo, I have copied this link to my home group, and value you as an experienced chess coach here at Chess.com! I'll have more questions in the coming months, but to start:

1. What would be a good balance for players at each level in distribution of their time in study, play, and analysis? NM Dan 'Coach' Heisman advises that for most beginning to intermediate players we should divide our time between study, play, and post game analysis of our games. What is your approach as a chess coach based on various levels of strength/rating of the student?

2. Is it better to review a game after it has just finished, or to allow some time and come back later for personal analysis? Is it better to review alone, or also review with your opponent after the game has just ended if they are willing? What is the proper place or balance for engine analysis in chess to review our completed games?

3.

1. For beginners I suggest to use 50% for plaing and 50% for analysing and studying new things. As a player improve I suggest the increase the time of the analysing and studying and dicrease the time of playing.

2. I suggest to analyse the game with your opponent just at the end. The analyse it at your own as soon as possible, so you can remember your thoughts about the variations. Then at the end I suggest you to analyse it with an engine. I think you can use the same amount of time for engine analysis as without engine at your own.
