Can you explain how to play against an unconventional opening?  For example, White moves a pawn one space or moves a side pawn or waits a long time to move his center pawns.  I can't seem to get a good Sicilian Dragon or Sicilian anything if they don't "play right"!

Hi,

I'm fascinated by positional exchange sac's but lack the competence to capatilise on the advantages and lose the game.

Could you show a few exchange sac's and explain the ideas for the sac and what the plan to follow would be.

White captures the defender of the f5 square to put a strong knight there and attack the king:

Black sacrifice the exchange for activity and to remove the strong d6 knight:

Dear IM Turzo,

If I may, another question..brief.

I have long been fascinated with this sequence:

1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 Bc5 4. Nf3 d6 5. Bb5

I was told Steinitz was the first to have played 5.Bb5, here.

I had more information, but lost it...

A Chess Database calls it  "C25  Vienna Gambit".

I have books on the Bishop's, Vienna, and a rather extensive treatment of the KGD. Not a trace of this move Bb5 anywhere!

I call it a KGD.  What do you say?

It is true that there are many intersections/transpositions in the Bishop's/Vienna complex, with the KGD thrown in, but in this case it seems that it has all the fundamental defining elements of the KGD.

Thank You!

I also checked a database and it calls it the Vienna Gambit. I think it can also appear from the King Gambit Declined. Like 1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3.Nf3 d6. 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. Bb5

If you want to learn it, I suggest you to look in both books and you will find it in at least one book or in a database.

John Shaw mentions it in Nessie (Otherwise known as his enormous 5 year book on the kings gambit)

On page 481 for the move order

e4 e5 f4 Bc5 Nf3 d6 Nc3 Nc6

He recomends Bc4 and he says "I have checked 5.Bb5 and 5.Na4 as well, but eventually concluded that neither yields any advantage for white, so save yourself the trouble, as most opponents will play 5... Nf6 here" (in responce to Bc4) (Then goes on to analyze Bg4 and Nf6)

So, it is mentioned, but only to say that white has no advantage there.

IM Attila, why do you think Magnus Carlsen is/was a better player than both Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov?

Thank you both, IM Turzo and logozar, for your answers.

logozar: I know about J Shaw's book but I don't have it. The KGD lines of course give 5.Bc4, but I don't understand the meaning of Shaw's

"so save yourself the trouble, as most opponents will play 5... Nf6 here" (in responce to Bc4)."

The usual response to 5.Bb5 is ...Nge7.

He says that because if he covered everything he would have to spend 1000+ pages.

I think he meant Nf6 in responce to Bc4 not Bb5 (Alt is Bg4)

What do you think of my study plan?

TACTICS

45 min to 1hr on chesstempo. First, I do standard (not timed). I have to get 5 tactics right in a row. If I fail one, I have to start over all 5 tactics. Once I get all 5 tactics in a row correct, I move to mixed mode (Tactics could be to win, not lose, or just to get a good position. Also, if you spend more than 5 min you rating is affected by time). I again have to do 5 tactics in a row correct. If I succeed, then I have to do blitz (blitz is like chess.com's tactic trainer, time impacts your rating). 5 tactics in a row. If I finish before 45 min - 1hr I repeat the process.

OPENING

30 min of opening study w/ chessgames.com database + arena + books sometimes.

MIDDLEGAME

I use chessgames.com's GUESS THE MOVE feature, and practice about 30 min.

ENDGAME

I use chessgames.com again to look up endgames, learn from SILMAN"S COMPLETE ENDGAME COURSE, do tactics in Lazlo Polgar's CHESS ENDGAMES BOOK, and do one endgame chess mentor every day. 30 min study, 30 min solving tactics.

CHESSBOOKS

Yusupov's BUILD UP YOUR CHESS 1 one chapter every day. HOW TO REASSESS YOUR CHESS 3RD EDITION 30 min.

GAMES

A couple blitz games per day, one 25|0 game every two days, OTB games about 5 tournaments a year (sometimes more).

My goal is to reach master level or close to master level at the end of 2016.

How to build up me repertoire?

I suggest you to review lot of master games and try to look games which were played by over 2500 players. It makes sure the quaily of the games are high most of the time. Try to look games whic have text annotations and try to understand the key ideas of the opening. When you find a game which you love, save it to your repertoire database.

Do you think if chess was played on beanbags that it could become more popular as it would look more fun ?

I do not think. Its current beautiful design gravitates more people.

Your plan is great. I would add 1 more thing. Please analyzse your 25 minutes games at least 30 minutes per game. I would also suggest to check the openings of your blitz games. Compare to the games which you want to follow. I wish you the best to reafh your goal at the end of 2016!
