"multi-tasking" is a lie that people like to believe because it makes them appear more productive.
not necessarily true in the case of music. certain types can positively affect the brain and thought processes, enhance concentration, etc. trying to cook dinner or watch tv while playing chess? nah.
but some types of music have been clearly shown to enhance thought processes

I've only just started playing but I've had 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' (Debussy) on loop, goes so well.
I love the Epic/Trailer music genre, anything from audiomachine or two steps from hell.
I like to listen to classical music while playing. It helps me tune out the other things going on around me.
I try to but I find it pretty distracting. Helps with calculation for me but stifles my creativity and clarity so I don't listen to music during serious games.
