Do you love or hate online chess?

I am not talking about playing chess online. I love chess.com

I am talking about playing online chess where you have a minimum of 1 day to choose your move. I love having the time and the convenience of the analysis board to obsess over every move and all the possible variations to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am playing the absolute best move I can find.

But I HATE how after all this work, after I have painstakingly found a slight advantage and grown it into an obvious one the reply moves start coming slower and slower until "pop" your opponent is on vacation.

Heck my 1st 2 games were in a team match. In my 1st game my opponent was white he made the 1st move i labored over my reply and what i thought would be intresting to play then after all that he timed out without playing a second move, and then the same guy (we had to play 2 games) played only 5 moves before timing out again.

So then i went to join an online tourny with some forum friends and i found out i had to complete 5 online games to join! WTF? So i started 3 simultaneous online games and it has been awesome in 2 days ive played almost 30 moves each game, i mean we are playing so fast it might as well be a 30 minute live game. I even already won one of those games... but now in one game im up a queen and a knight, and in the other just a knight against a pawn in a nice endgame... and the reply moves just start coming in slower and slower. It is so irritating to have to maintain focus to finish something in a month that could take me 5 minutes over the board right now.

Its like torturous online extortion!

I thought having to wait 5 or 10 minutes for jerks in live chess was bad! Thats nothing compared to having to wait a month to grind out a winning end game. Oh and the stress of after having spent so much effort to not forget to play or get lazy and blunder! It hasnt even happened yet but i cant even stand the thought of it!

Love it or hate it i cant make up my mind yet but ill tell you one thing i am NEVER throwing out an open online seek ever ever ever again... its like being held hostage!

While I would LOVE to find people in my area of Wisconsin (United States) that...is possibly asking for a bit much. So while I don't much care for online chess in general, or even live chess online, I would prefer someone to actually look at and talk to.

To more fully answer your question, if it isn't live there is a good chance I'll forget about it. So, uh...not my thing lol

quietvolcano

I like online chess. Mainly because of all the time to think.

blackrabbitto

I have to say I like the online format. I'm a bit lazy about doing it, but using the "Notes" tab makes it easy to pick up the thread of a game when you've waited a day or three for opponent to make a move. Also it's legal to use Opening Explorer and Game Editor / Analysis Board of course, and I use those quite a lot.

pdve

i like it. but it's not fair when the opponent spends a lot of time thinking and i play on intuition.Smile

I used to like it, but then I realized it made my games worse. Online chess doesn't offer the same kind of stress as OTB chess. It also creates this misunderstanding that you can get away with anything no matter the position.

It's just experimental chess.

How would you get away with anything? I thought that was only possible in bullet?

Really? wow i thought thats how they caught the cheaters; using the resources of the website. No wonder one of my opponents went from brillant to braindead after move 8. Using opening explorer or game editor is the same as using an engine in my opinion... are they allowed to do that in live chess too?

Online chess players only put in half the effort for non-OTB games.

You could basically let your engine play in correspondence chess. You are allowed to do all the research you want.

MrKornKid

I PREFER live chess but I do better in online chess.  I tend to make moves in the same amount of time, aka, no thought lol, but I seem to do better.  The fruits of the non thinking shine.

Both are great in their own ways eh.

blackrabbitto

Those are not allowed in live chess. Maybe it accounts for why people's online rating is about 200 above their live rating. However, they're just learning tools really - somewhat different from using an engine (which I've never done).

Not on this site. RTFM

yeah blackrabbitto you inspired me to look up the rules on the FAQ page. I cant argue with the logic behind the rules it all makes sense, but that definitely turns me off to online chess. Its like an open book test, at that point we are not "playing" chess, we are merely study buddies!

blackrabbitto

I had to look up what RTFM means lol ... I've led such a sheltered life!

MrKornKid

Dang, I am 25 and have NO clue what RTFM mean. =/ Read the fuckin manual is my best guess.

pdve

yereslov, engines are not allowed. lol have you been using engines so far?Smile

I love online chess. I found serious OTB too stressful and many opponents had annoying and deliberately distracting habits such as constantly looking at their watch or jiggling a couple pawns. For me I found Live chess somewhat stressful and very impersonal. Online chess is relaxing and very convenient.

I have found online chess to be of tremendous value in terms of improving my skills. Simply put the amount of time to think and consider your moves has really been beneficial and raised my skills in otb play, both strategically, tactically and in terms of calculation.

I do however also hate it when people that are clearly lost wants to play on for weeks on end, for the same reason I always resign early aswell if I have an objectively lost game or I play against a strong opponent and lose a piece.
