Do you make "waiting" moves????

Sometimes in OTB play I used to play people that were considerably better than me and it appeared occasionally they made moves that were safe but just waiting (to see what the other player was going to do)....usually in complex or even mid-game positions where there were no moves that seemed to give a clear advantage. I asked them about this later and some of the more humble players admitted that this was true....but the master said he never did that.... Well, I have caught myself doing it frequently...do other players do this often too?

Yes. It is called "turtling"

I make waiting moves in bullet chess. And sometimes in blitz.

It depends. Sometimes it's handy to make a few quick moves when low on time. Also, if the game is about to go to the finale, I might shuffle a bit to pry into the position. Now, depending on what happens, that's when I decide where to enter the enemy position, if at all. However, clearly doing nothing at all is not what I do. I might abort a plan halfway and go into the defense if the opponent attacks, but I never consider that my problem. People do find it annoying, but then they should not attack me while I'm building up my attack.

yeah, I know what you mean sometimes moves that seem "waiting" can have great purpose....moves like a3 and h6 come to mind.....

zugzwang! How I love that word! Good point! All decent chess players use positional moves to manipulate their opponent into making bad moves in the endgame...
