Do you play with passion or cool reserve

I've known players who "work themselves up" with various sources of motivation before they play, some positive and some not. They expend a tremendous amount of emotionl energy when they play.

I've also faced players who have advanced degrees in mathematics or computer science who take a calm, steady, problem solving approach to the game.

Like many, I am somewhere in between. Where do you fall on the scale?

since i only play turned based it is hard to imagine getting worked up for a game of chess.  perhaps a 1 minute game would get the blood pumping, but perhaps not.

I don't know the name for it, but i've experienced it!

I was thinking of otb play, but I guess it would apply more to live than turn based on chess.com.

i think i would still need to be playing with someone i know and can joke around with to really get me excited though.  trash talk helps with passion.

I know an older guy from Serbia who feels like you have to prove yourself any time you play chess, as if each game were a crucible in which character is forged. My feelings are contrary to his. I don't feel like I have anything to prove to anybody.

Personally I believe reserved is better. It is when I start getting emotional that I start to lose most often.

Don't stereotype - us quantitative people can get just as worked up about chess as everyone else :-P

azziralc

It's just an game.. So why your feelings (emotional) is above you??

azziralc

don't focus yourself in what they say, but to the game! trust me it's an good idea.. =o

I had a period when I was younger when I just felt this overwhelming neccessity to completely crush every opponent I played, and nothing less was good enough.

Once I got over this and realised that 1) chess is a draw and 2) chess is not about one person, its about two people testing out their ideas against one another, my rating jumped from 1700 to 2000 :-)

azziralc

  your right..

Depends on my opponent and the seriousness of the game.  When I want to play well I tend toward the calm side though.
