Do you think analog clocks should be banned !?

I mean it's a 21st century, we have digital clocks now , some have smartphones with clock on it , so what even the point of having anolog clocks any more?

Should they all be discarded ?

No Way...there is something nice about the tick of the clock.

The advantage of analogue clocks is that they geometrically depict the amount of time left, which I and many players like.

However, I agree that digital clocks are better overall - you can do the math in your head quickly, and they allow for increments and delays, which are vital. Plus, they tell you the exact time.

I will surrender my analog clock when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Also, I have to admit, analogue clocks are just so much cooler than digital clocks wink.png

I  accept your kind offer to buy me a new clock after banning the one I have used for 30 years.

In the USCF it's actually possible to request the use of a digital clock if an analog one is being used.

No disrespect intended but I think analog clocks belongs in a museum

I don't think that anyone has used an analog clock at any of Spokane's tournaments since 2009. In that year, we hosted the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship. For that event, we purchased 60 new digital clocks. Now, there are always plenty available at our tournaments.

Haha I remember using my analog clock at my first few OTB tournaments. When I train using time, I prefer to use the Analog clock than the digital.

Analog clocks will be disallowed in US tournaments in the near future.

Smartphones actually tend to be banned a lot more than analog clocks ...

thegreat_patzer

correct. smartphones have nothing to do with it.

still unless I am uninformed- analog clocks ARE still cheaper.

what I don't know is that if they can do Delay or increment games.  and what about multiple Time controls, like what the GM plays.  90 minutes for 40 moves, then etc, etc.

maybe time controls are getting too complicated for the old analog clocks.

We should ban pen(cil) and paper.  We have the Mon Roi to take notation for us.

On a further subject, let's have traffic lights sent messages to the cars of when to stop or go.  Let's not have the car start until the seat belt is fastened and positive ID and permission is verified.

Banned or not, I'm keeping mine. I like it and can use it when I play with my friends.

There will be driverless cars soon enough. I'm even hearing about 'internet toasters' FFS.

Not at all. Decades with tons of new technology and changing behavior on the one hand, on the other good things will stay no matter of new things. Knowing  the value instead of replacing with "new" things is the key but so many people are replacing settled things with new and archieve more problems in the long run.

And how exactly do we achieve more problems with digital clocks?
