Do you think chess and music are related?

Yes, I will express the relation between chess and music in folk dance.

Just catching up on recent posts here, I am delighted to see that my deceptively simple questions concerning duck hunting and shoe polish have engendered so much profound philosophical speculation. Only in such a venue, I believe, could so many offer so much so often to so few about so ....  Wait.  I retract that.

"But Scotch...is seriouser still"...

Morris dancers dance in a line..like pawns on the attack.

Of course "Morris Dancers!"  It's all so clear now!  Nice of you Stevie, to help Andy out like that. (And both of you, thanks for picking up on my Churchill reference.  Gosh, it's like the 3 of us are now sharing one brain!)

Okay you two, I need to use it tomorrow!  I've got a test (oh wait, never mind...it's a drug test).

Been four days. Trying to figure it out. Now, I have all of these other conundrums to think about. Is chess related to duckhunting? Fruitflies? Shoe polish? Is it nostalgic? Is it no wonder I suck so bad at this game since I can't see the correlation among these things?

I'm still waiting to see the relation between folk dance and chess! That should be great!

For my money, post #17 answers the initial question clearly.

It is a known fact that David Oistrakh, arguably the best violinist ever, was an avid chess player.

Chess requires visual pattern recognition and memory, and at the upper levels (e.g., end games), mathematical skills.

Music requires auditory pattern recognition and memory, and at the upper levels (try counting off 30 measures before you strike your triangle!), mathematical skills.

Tom Lehrer:   math professor and gifted musician --- thus, inevitably, a brilliant chess player!

Chess and music  are fields in which it is possible to be a child prodigy.

Chess and music are both considered to be international languages.

Timing is vital in both chess and music.

Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy.  TARRASCH

Interestingly music & chess stimulate activity in the same areas of the brain.

Having flipped a coin & decided to accept degeneration of other brain-segments due to alcohol am praying liver holds-out...

I was unaware of the similarities you mention. If true, my brain must be more stimulated by music, since I stink at chess!

I'm with you regarding the second sentence!
