I like chess better imo
more skill to it (In my opinion as said) and its more popular
I will give my personal opinion, I think chess variants give the score.

I think Variants make chess fun for people
And i personally really like variants
I like Hidden Identity Chess, 007 Detente Chess, and Alice Chess. From those three, I like Hidden Identity Chess the most but with a twist .You can fake a piece's move but if you are suspected that the piece you moved made an illegal move you will show them your piece and if they guessed right, you will lose that piece (if it is your King, you lose the game) and if they guessed wrong, you can chose any of your opponent's piece and they will lose it (if it is his King, they do not lose anything). Also, when two pieces castled but are suspected, two of those pieces will be removed instead if they are proven guilty but if not, two of their opponent's piece will be removed (if one of them is his King, only the other one will be removed). The player who capture the opponent's King wins.
The King and Rook can still castle even though They had moved already, as long as they are on the rank where major pieces resides and they had at least two spaces in between and there is no opponet's piece in between. To castle, the King walks toward the rook two spaces and the rook will jump across and to the other side of the King.
I will give my personal opinion, I think chess variants give the score.

The original game is vastly superior.
Well, not entirely original. Rather, modern chess (developed in 1475) after castling rules were stable (c. 1650) and with the addition of certain tournament standards (late 1800s).
