🎯Do you think Gukesh deserves to be World Champion?

Neither of the contestants should have played for the world championship... There are other stronger players

An interesting question might be who has been world champion, and also been world number one for the entire time they were champion. As far as I know Magnus Carlsen was number one the entire time. Was anyone else?

Only Fischer, but then he didn’t play any games as World Champion.

No, Gukesh is not deserved world champion. The only deserved world champion is NiobiumChess, othrwise he would not afford chess world with such an idiotic question.

Why is this even a question??? Did he not win fair and square every single match up to this point???? I am so done with the outright racism going on this is insane. Anyone who says he doesn't deserve to be world champion has zero actual reasons to back up their opinion. Buy burnol and keep crying.

Why did these other stronger players losses/absence take away from Gukesh's accomplishment? Last time I checked loss by forfeit is still a loss, I dont think Gukesh can force Magnus on gun point to prove a point genius.

I think the OP's point is that Gukesh isn't as high of quality world champion as he could or should be. But then neither is Ding. Neither player are the caliber of someone like Magnus.

Obviously Gukesh "deserves" to be world champion. He won fair and square. A more interesting conversation is how much or how often world champions are also the very best players in the world. This recent world championship match left a lot to be desired for some people. One of the players was not even top 10 in the world.

Lil bro is 18 years old, if you want higher quality give him 10-15 years to reach his prime. The fact an 18 year old kid defeated world top 10 players in candidates should actually be enough high quality already but since you expect him to be some chess god who spots mate in 100 you have to give him time

Why didnt caruana win candidates then? and why did gukesh win?? bruh the cope is insane. grown man couldnt defeat a 17 year old kid and you say caruana better. If he was better he would be world champ right now lmfao

That's pretty easy. Either they chose not to play, or didn't play well enough to qualify for the world championship. Not many people are saying Gukesh isn't worthy of winning. What they ARE saying is that he's just not the best.

It seems apparent that lots of world champions were not near the best in the world at some point during their time as world champion. But in this particular case, one was about 5th and the other was something like 20th. Very good, for sure. But not the best.

You're the ONLY one to mention race..... which makes YOU the one wanting racism. Which is WHY brainwashed racists like YOU bring it up in the first place, because you're racist.

He deserved to be world champion because he beat the opposition he had in front of him. It doesn't make him the best player in the world. Only a crazy person would say Carlsen isn't the best but he choose not to play so Gukesh took the opportunity.

Gukesh played against Caruana, Nepo, and Nakamura, 2 times each, in the Candidates (6 games in total).

None of those players were able to beat Gukesh - not even once.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd say that Caruana has certainly established himself as a perrenial top player. But Gukesh is only 18 and already closing in on 2800.

Caruana was a 2600 player at the same age.

Times change, and the younger generations are climbing fast ...

Gukesh is the current FIDE sanctioned World Champion after beating reigning World Champion Ding in their recent match. There is no reason to say Gukesh doesn’t deserve the title. What people may think concerning who is the best in the world is relative to how they weigh factors like titles, ratings, and recent tournament accomplishments. To that, opinions may vary and include Magnus.

It’s important to remember that not all FIDE World Champions have been rated number one during their reign. Boris never was ranked number one when he was World Champion as Bobby held that spot when FIDE introduced ratings in 1971, and while Vladimir best Garry in their match in 2000 and later on beat Veselin in 2006 reunification match to become the FIDE World Champion, he likewise never reached the number one rated player in the world. Now, Ding and presently Gukesh also have not reached number one rated while World Champion, although Gukesh may still do so in the future, we will see. There are additional examples of players being FIDE World Champion while not the number one rated player as well, but the above are undisputed examples of World Champions and having never reached the number one rating while holding the title. For example, former World Champion Magnus, when challenging Vishwanathan for the title in 2013, was rated number one for several years before that match to become World Champion.

The process of winning the World Championship title isn’t simply who’s the highest rated at the time, but who participates, has the stamina and perseverance to endure the qualification process to compete for the title and beat whomever their opponent is in order to win it. You have to play better than dozens of other players for a significant amount of time to accomplish it. In that respect, they deserve their claim to that title, whatever their rating may be, especially if the highest rated player has opted not to participate in the process and compete. You can’t beat players who aren’t there competing for the title themselves.

Totally agree with your post!

Many World Champions were not the highest rated.

MATCH PlAY IS DIFFERENT THAT TOURNAMENT !!!

Only 4 games in match play seperate Karpov from Kasparov.... its why Botvanik was able to defend his title or win it back. In match play, opponents figure out each other's strengths and weakness, dissect each other's tactics and their end game technique..

Magnus recently commented he doesn't think Classical time controls are a true representation of the sport of chess.

WHAT BUNK.....! GARBAGE!.... PURE HOGWASH!

I was skeptical on why Magnus vacated the title ... Every title defense someone was getting closer to beating him in match play. I was thinking ... is he afraid of loosing, getting beat in a match? ???

Has he got the "Fisher phobia?"

Magnus is the highest rated player... but if he lost in match play, chess fans would no longer think he was the strongest...

MAGNUS comment's about classical time controlls convinces me my intuition is correct.... Why else would he say that while putting down Gukesh victory...??

It's clear to me his ego can't handle someone else being in the spotlight....or that the Chess world thinking he's not the greatest anymore....

Sorry Magnus... "Father Time " is going to set you upon his lap and explain the facts of life real soon...
