Do you think more people should play chess for $$$ ?

I'm talking about OTB of course.

Chess is a sport

Time = money

I mean it's hard work, talent there's no luck, you can't cheat , so why not get game and your time worth it financially?

I mean if you are an adult and just playing for fun it's kind of silly , coz you are not a kid. You can play for fun over Internet at home. But if you are somewhere like parks, coffee shops, friends house etc... wouldn't it be common sense to play for $? For me it is .

You don't have to play 100$ , we'll you could , but if you are just friends or want to play for fun bet 5$, 2$ even 1$ is not much at all but what it does it will bring more spiciness to the game, more effort, better quality game and your time worth it.

Playing for money is great , betting. If you loose you have more motivation to improve and get your money back and if you win you deserve it, don't you think?

Elaborate please

Playing for money would just make losing a game suck really hard.

If you're playing a friend then, unless you are equally matched, one of you is going to lose more games (and money) than the other... perhaps the friendship and enjoyment of playing chess can survive that...

You play for money in these games because you believe that you have a greater chance of making some quick bucks. But if you ever ask me to do the same, I would completely turn down your offer. Even if I was like a million times stronger than you and was sure of a win, I would still refuse to do bets. Maybe you feel a bit better after winning, but on the other side your opponent might not appreciate it. It might even be a deal breaker, who knows. Stay away from this idea please.

Well if you are playing a friend and he's much stronger then you say an IM, then pretty much you are paying for a lessons, say 1$ for a game which is pretty cheap any way ( unless you are playing 1min games 😂).

No I disagree as I said before time = money and I don't like waisting my time, and if I loose $ it's evendors better it pushes me even futher, harder to learn more,to improve,to study consistently, to have a goal. It motivates you alot.

If you don't like wasting time, then don't come to forums here. Simple as that.😂

You think your gonna collect money from a chess playing drug addict whose only concern is making some quick cash before his his withdrawals begin?

ESP-918

Why everyone plays golf? Because it brings big $$ or let me rephrase this why everyone is trying to be a golfer , a soccer player , a footballer and not many people professional chess players? Why ? Sure some people like the sport no doubt , but majority do it for the $$$ which particular sport or an activity bring , it means safe future. I'm sure if you ask professional athletes if they would like to switch to chess and sit comfortably just pushing wood , instead of getting injured rugby, ufc, soccer, golf you name it I'm SURE 98% would say HELL YEAH ! ONLY if it brings more or similar financial independence.

So don't sit here and try to act all innocent , saying money is not everything, it's just for fun bla bla bla

Because of people like YOU chess is considered a kids game where everyone playing for fun and prizes are ridiculously low.

If more people associated ches with $ it would be considered an Elite sport , not for kids but for business people , similar money to poker.

If you like to play with this kind of people it's your choice.

No you missed my point. Your the one who wants to play chess in parks for cash because you said its silly for adults to play chess for fun. I am saying that only an idiot suggests going to the parks to make quick cash playing chess. What kind of people do you expect to see in these parks.

I wasn't talking about parks read it carefully my thread I said any place you can imagen , parks included. And even in parks people like lawyers, doctors and others playing chess they just don't wear their uniforms.

Your have very narrow mind and you are trying to bring me to different direction, completely missing my point here. I'm not talking about parks here you can even play in a toilet as you wish my point here is chess being Elite sport which means $$$ , look at poker professional makes Toms of course , BUT how about non professional who play in parks, coffee shops, homes do they play 1 dollar a game? Exactly they have different mentality towards it, because they know poker = big money, poker= high bets, poker means = you must have money to play ,

.. Your idea, works best, if you 'market' yourself, as an instructional 'service', as it were.

I'm providing a 'link' to give you, a better idea, what I'm 'talking' about ; Since it's already been implimented, at Least once, in the 'usa'.

There are also videos, of "Jude Acers" doing his 'chess' for hire, 'schtick' {'yiddish' word}, on "YouTube'; Plus apparently, he has a 'page' or 2, on 'Facebook' and 'wikipedia'.

Good Luck, to You !

You're the one who needs to elaborate on why adults SHOULD play chess for money. What entails "should" instead of "can"?

In what way does adulthood necessitate that any leisurely activity be pursued only when money is involved? How is that "common sense"? How is it "silly" to entertain any activity just for fun?

Can't see any legitimate way in which entertaining chess for fun or as a hobbie could be improved by the introduction of monetary reward.

Plus, there's no shortage of tournaments where professional players are monetarily rewarded. Chess is already entertained as a sports competition (the presence or absence of monetary reward does not determine what is or isn't a "sport"), so it's not very clear what point you're trying to make.

A simple "No" is enough reply since you aren't expressing any sort of logical framework to support your basic-greedy-desire-based opinion.

The Big Lebowsky would give you an apt response.

Why not?

Is there really a difference between winning a bet and winning a prize at a tournament? In both cases, you're putting down cash up front in the hope of attaining a bigger payoff after your games.*

A master I know, in a moment of bravado, offered odds of 5-1 that he would go five-for-five in a local tournament. I told him to put me down for $20. Was this wrong of me? **

Many classic betting games (such as the ubiquitous Texas Hold 'em Poker) also require great mental skill. With poker surging in popularity, would not adding a financial element to chess spark some interest? Is it worth it? ***

Why not, earning while playing is good, that's why we invest in buying resources to learn, and of course a good computer to help us study in the internet...we pay the electric bills...so earning is just right to compensate the money that goes from our pocket...and most of all we invest so much time in playing/learning..

I enjoyed watching Hikaru and Eric Hansen play a bullet match OTB for money.

But I don't play for money myself.

I played park chess players in LA and NY. They play for $ and serious. Watch for cheaters on blitz games especially with their knights and bishops. I would rate their category at 1700-1900 strong. If you are not within that range, don't bother playing.....I lost $20 just trying to past time while waiting for friends. Did I also mention that they can bait you good too! (Letting you win) Before you know it,  they got you hook, line and sinker. Lesson learned...and worth it. Lol.
