The FTC sued makers for unfounded claims and there is no objective scientific evidence that it does anything. The way the laws are constructed, supplement makers can say almost anything and get away with it. Many times there are fines afterwards, but the companies declare bankruptcy and the people behind the scenes keep their millions.
I really hope the new administration does something about this, but the supplement industry spends millions on lobbying efforts and science spends zero. You tell me who will win.
