just me telling you how to play.

You have 3 member posts, a 1006 rating in quick games, 787 in blitz, and 1046 in long, and you says you've taught at least 2 people.

Honestly?

Get some credentials before posting here. I don't mean to be arrogant, but you didn't think before you posted this thread.

I think she means telling people how the pieces move?

This is a really interesting forum! At first I just wanted to defend Chessgirl for offering help. I think more people should have her spirit! One should try to teach whatever one knows and not try to make conspiracies against the laypeople! She obviously was refering to those below her ability, so that one who mocked her is one to be mocked. Now I see where this forum has gone, and I really want a piece of the action! HELP me with my games SOMEBODY!

I laughed when I read 1046 rating.  I have 1529 and I know that I don't have anything to teach anyone because I consider this a sucky rating, I blunder left and right, and I don't understand all the factors of the chess puzzle appropriately but as I walked to the bathroom and had a seat and stared around at the tiles...it occurred to me that very high rated players are probably not the ideal people to see the very small frustrations of a 500 - 900 player.  Maybe chessgirl would be able to instruct someone at that level better and express the changes needing to be made more directly?

Afaf, you've just made me want to tile my bathroom in black and white so I can play correspondance-style chess with my housemates when sitting on the throne...

I'm in the 1200-1500 range. Fluctuates a lot. I will take all the help I can get.

I don't really have a rating on chess.com though.

Dan Heisman over at ChessCafe has a great article on what to look for in a chess instructor. His article generally refers to serious interest and suggests that playing strength at or greater than 1700 ELO is probably necessary in an instructor, as - in his experience - "players lower than 1700 often inadvertantly teach bad habits, or don't know how to detect or correct them."

However, finding someone with the ability to give helpful chess advice is a less demanding task than finding an bona fide instructor whom you are willing to pay. So, yes ... even someone with a quite low rating might still be able to help another out. Advice as simple as "don't move a piece too many times in the opening before finishing your development" - though not without exception - will be very helpful to a novice, and can certainly come from the lips of a player with only modest playing ability and a low rating.

Indeed, my OTB chess rating has never seen 1700, but I have been a USCF Certified Coach, coached a number of youth and adult players, and all have improved as as result. Remember, as Dan says in the article, "there is only a loose correlation between chess playing ability and coaching ability."

So, get out there and help someone ... Cool

Nicely put DrawMaster, yes I like Dan Heisman's articles too. Btw what is 1700 ELO same as to chess.com rating ?
