Does chess cause stress?
Well Fishy, you said everything yourself what there was to say. For me chess is also relaxing. Or using my brain in other way when im overstressed from work or adult stuffs. It can be stressful depending on how you take the win or loss. Or if your Elo points matter to you. Or if you just play chess to chillax and turn everything off for few minutes while still using your brain. But then, what is nowadays not stressful?
Chess definitely brings a mix of focus and tension, but it can also be a positive challenge that sharpens your mind and resilience. Combining this with ideas from BetterMe’s Wellness Week , taking intentional breaks, practicing mindfulness, and celebrating small achievements can help manage stress, boost concentration, and make both casual and competitive games more enjoyable while supporting overall mental well-being.
Of course — but positively! Chess is indeed stressful at times, particularly in playing closely fought games or when competing. Clock pressure, fear of mistakes, and mental fatigue from long calculation can get to you. But for most, it is also a source of positive stress. It enhances concentration, decision-making capacity, and resilience. As with any competitive activity, it's all in the management. Casual games? Probably not that frightening. Tournaments? That's an entirely different matter.
How about you — does chess frighten you or enable you to unwind?
