Let "X" represent something undefined. Does it make any sense to ask if X exists?

Kant said that existence is not a predicate. Only predicates can be described. Therefore, reality is undefined!

Asking what created reality is like asking if the number 5 is married. Obviously, to say yes is silly. However, to say no is also silly, the number 5 is not a bachelor!

I bet trysts won't bite that, Chewie. Nice try, though.

I agree with Einstein that those that lack a sense of awe are half dead. Those that have no interest in the big questions are worse then dead, they are silly people.

I did bite on it, Pulpofeira, 'cause I actually started to read the thread again!Embarassed ...before I realized again how ridiculous it isLaughing

Even those that think that philosophy is a waste of time are philosophers. They follow the teachings of the philosophy called pragmatism.

I think the search for ultimate truth (even if unobtainable ) is the most noble of pursuits. In other words I value truth more then a fabrige egg,or other silly symbols of success.

Truth is but a concept. Looking for a definite answer to anything is yet another tail-chasing recreation that humans have taken up.

I do not think that cartoon presents an actual paradox. However, think paradoxs are the path to truth. For example, "Hempel's Ravens", Godel, symbol grounding problem etc.

If there is no truth (that things are in a certain way) there is nothing real. I find that position absurd.

Avatar of fischerman_bob

I think that words can refer to reality. Therefore I believe in truth.

The fact that it is absurd does not mean that it is not true.

It is true that there is no truth??? You contradict yourself sir.

Its hard not to joke on this forum.  We just Kant decide. I totally thought the same thing as trysts but for some reason was compelled to put my 2 cents in.

And all I wanted people to know was that I was arguing against the OP's post and used a half-joking example that when taken out of context made me look ridiculous!  This is why I stay off internet forums,Innocent but my reality today happened to be on this one.

The funny thing is we think so deeply about this garbage yet we probably have less understanding when done.  Reminds me of chess, at times.

And how is it any more ridiculous than the "are there any insane women chess players?" thread which I'm sure many of you will enjoy?  More confusing maybe, but not more ridiculous.

bob, words can describe truth. but there's no way ( i think ) that we can know for sure whether the word represents the truth or, as descartes says, an evil genius misleading us. of course truth exists. but we can't know it (only we can have strong beliefs as Plato says in his meno, but that's all. we can never be sure)

Touche. There is simply no word for what is. "True" and "reality" are simply words, therefore concepts, but the idea is still sound.
