If you are are the weaker player and the material is equal does it help you to exchange pieces to potentially reduce the complexity of the game ? All other things being equal does it make any significant difference to trade pieces of equal value?

I used to think so, but then read an article written by a ranked player talking about the likelihood of amateurs doing exactly that.  His philosophy was to sit back and let them, as it simplified things for him and brought the endgame closer, where his superior skill would tell.  I also agree with skull - there is a lot to know about endgames.  Try Tactics Trainer for a while and you will see what I mean.  I am constantly reminded of just how complex a seemingly simple position can be.

Against strong computers, trading down and trying to stay equal seems to be about all most people can hope to achieve. So I am inclined to say yes. If it will allow you to score a draw against a 3000 elo machine, then it can't be all bad.

actually if you can avoid tactics, keeping games closed has worked better for me at drawing much better players/engines
