Hi all. I have observed that music changes my chess ability for better and for worse depending on the type of music E.g listening to chill music makes me worry about time less and my rating has been going up. Has anyone else noticed this?

Listening to Heilung or Wardruna increased my elo by 50 points, and my dog actually catches squirrels instead of just chasing them.

Also I sleep outside now during a full moon. The elo points are worth it.

Stage Manager: “Do you guys need drum sticks?”

Heilung: “No, we have antlers”.

Hi Defenceking27:

I have not et noticed this trend of elo points whenever listening to music. It's probably because either I do not play enough chess games or I never listened to music while playing chess.

An advantage of listening to music could be what you said: It helps you mentally to avoid time trouble. Too much concentration in games leads to anxiety and a higher chance of blundering because you have so much pressure (Another benefit is you can encode stockfish moves into the music, giving you a permanent advantage while listening. You can probably increase your elo points by 2000 doing this).

A disadvantge of listening to music is that the music draws your concentration and lulls you off to sleep. In the midst of a tactical sequence sleeping for 1 move could be the end of a 10 game winning streak. Taking your attention off the clock might also be a blunder in blitz games, as you can time outwhile not worrying about the clock.

Ultimately. just do what you think is good for your playing strength. I am not a critic of this, but I am also not your father. If you think listening to music improves your game, then go for it.

Changed my mind: My answer is Yes for 2 reasons:
1. Intense concentration bonus: When I am listening sometimes I gain a concentration boost which is what I need to grind a game.
2. Mind games: When you turn on the speakers when sitting over the board across someone, it's a pretty good intimidation tactic.
I hope that answers your question from my perspective.

Yes, because its too quiet without it.

When i listen to music i dont get into my head as much and gain the ability to lock in and play with a consistant 70-80% accuracy during bullet games. So yes I think it does help in the aspect that you can just return to basics and play faster with music
