By all accounts he hasn't memorised much in the way of openings. Of course he's memorised loads of patterns, no good chess player hasn't. Yes he has talent.
I love the 'some tactics' part too, like he's just OK.

This is the single most idiotic question for the last year or so.
Magnus is a chess genius of a caliber of Capablanca. His power is his outstanding positional understanding, and his awesome fighting spirit.
I consider myself too weak to judge his play.
It's not an idiotic question because Magnus Carlsen has austism, or a mild for of aspergers. That's an immediate advantage in having lopsided strength which in Magnus's case went to chess, and not learning about trains or ornathology. Because of his disease everything he thinks is filtered through chess and it is a great tool that normal people don't have. I'd love to a disease that gives me an unfair advantage. If I had aspergers I'd have have nothing better to do then pwn noobs at tournaments all day. ez
Now that's an idiotic statement. Just who has determined that this advantage is "unfair"? Sounds like untalented jealousy to Us. >:[

It does look like he is having some kind of disease but i am not sure..
I can say David Navarra definitely has an autistic syndrom (still, he is an almost self-taught super-GM, and an extremely likeable personality), but Carlsen? No, he is a perfectly normal guy. His only "disease" is that he is a chess genius, simple as that.
Magnus Carlsen also seems to have good social skills amongst his peers from what I heard; skill who is definitively the biggest weakness of autistic/Aspie syndrom. Guess that theory going down...
or has he just memorized 60-70% of chess theory, openings, endgame theory and some tactics ?
This is the most stupid question of the century. Grow up kido. Watch this video on Magnus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc_v9mTfhC8
Theres no question that Magnus has talent, He was able to beat Karpov and draw Kasparov when he was 13 and only an IM!!!
Carlsen has never been tested for aspergers. If he is boderline aspergers, he is obviously highly functional. I don't think it is of much importance or significance one way or the other. Clearly he has talent.
To say Magnus Carlsen is "talented" is do him a sever injustice. "Talented" are some of those individuals who appear on American Idol. Magnus Carlsen, like Mozart, Van Gogh, Capablanca and Fischer is "profoundly gifted." There is at least an order of magnitude between the talented and the profoundly gifted. At least in Our humble opinion. >:[
