As for Jrobi, his purpose is clearly stated in his info if one just bothers to read. If someone takes his videos on face value only, that's their loss. I think I've said most of I want to say on this issue.

just mentioning "I dont know what Im doing" in a sidebar isnt enough though.. people dont just read that and say "ok, he is clueless Im only going to watch this for fun"

they read the warning but then slowly give into the authority system of his consistant flaws.

lets face it, most of the people on youtube are probably 800 or less ability level (essentially someone who only plays at a family picnic) all they want to know about it opening traps. its all garbage. the only traps they should be worried about is an Imperial breach in sector 47.

Well, people at 800 or less should probably do something else than watch videos to begin with. Just a thought.

There is an event in chess going on right now. You know what it's called? It's called the World Championship. You know what else? I like chess. Even if I only have a 800 rating. They said that study of master's games is the way to get better. These are the top Masters: Anand and Topalov. They are playing. I want to learn. There are no books on the Championship games. There are only annotations, like at Chessbase. These are way too dry. A lot is too advanced for me, but I got an idea.

I decided to preview the Chessbase annotations. I'd first watch a youtube video on a WC game. At the beginning I saw a kingscrusher's video. He taught me the important points in the game. It wasn't just like someone reading the moves to me. It was someone telling me what Anand and Topalov were thinking. It really helped. I had some understanding of the game, and it made it a lot easier to play thru the annotations on Chessbase.

But one game I searched youtube and guess what? I didn't find kingscrusher. It was jrobi's video that came up. I decided I might as well watch it. But after I watched his video, I got really confused. I couldn't understand the Chessbase annotations like I did after kingscrusher. Jrobi didn't cover the same points as Chessbase, and the points they shared disagreed. I had to wait for kingscrusher's video and then I had to start all over again. Jrobi was just a waste of time for me. My point is, "Does Jrobi know what he's talking about? NO. Does this really matter if your just a beginner. YES."

You know what? There aren't Chessbase annotations of all of jrobi's videos. That's why you don't know at 1250 whether what you learned from jrobi is good advice or not, and why I know at 800 that it's not. I'm not pretending to be an expert. I just had Chessbase to compare.

You created this fantasy that this thread is about fanboys in a fight, when it's not. You decided that someone who got confused over jrobi's videos only watches his videos to learn chess, and must not have half-a-brain if they do that. That's not true. Your totaly looking at this the wrong way. You also started attacking me personally because I have a different opinion about jrobi than you do. You even started making fun of my games. That's just really wierd. I don't know who patzerisk is, but if you think my game is ruined, it's because it hasn't been built yet. Please don't send me private messages no more. I don't know you, and I think your strange.

Very classy of you posting private messages on the forums. My main point of messaging you in private was  exactly to avoid further flame wars in this useless thread.

Actually, my favourite commentator is probably thechesswebsite... He recently did a video on the Latvian Gambit, too!

I agree. He's also got his own website - www.thechesswebsite.com where he's got videos and other puzzles that have helped a complete beginner like myself.

SchofieldKid

Jrobi has gotten alot better but you have to remember he started hsi vids while learning chess.

SliverKnight75

Jrobi's for absolute beginners I think, and he went from learning the rules to a 1700 rating in about 800 games I think that is doing pretty well,he seems not to play standard games anymore though and only blitz.

Now if I have played 2000 standard games on a particular server and have never reached 1700 although have come pretty close ,yet and have known how to play chess for longer then him, thats gotta be good.

I have played about 200 blitz's games and have a rating of 900,Jrobi has played about 3000 blitz games to have his current blitz rating of 1178 you can say that that his doing pretty well and his openning video's are only for the first six seven moves of a game just to get people started.

Practicality

From what I understand, the best teacher for you is going to be generally about two classes above you. This way their knowledge will be sufficient to actually be able to teach you, but not so far beyond where you are to for it to be confusing. So if jrobi's rating is about 1700, this means if you are rated between 1200 and 1400 you will probably find his instruction helpful.

If you are rated lower than that it will probably be confusing, and if you are rated above that it will seem like garbage to you.

Bugnado

I like Tupac. And the Beastie Boys.  But not in that order.

furtivamente

Personally I like http://www.youtube.com/user/krakkaskak best. He's a GM, his English is quite clear, and his commentaries are always funny. The only downside is that he's disappeared from Youtube for quite long (his last uploaded video is dated 7 months ago).

The last time I watched his videos was in Chessdom where he did commentary Candidates Matches.

Do you have graphical EQ? Or bass/treble controls for your speakers?

Cool

good point!

CerebralAssassin

Jrobi is ok....not a very strong player but at least has presentation skills and is understandable.

Jerry and Majnu are my favorites though.

GeordiLaForge

My problem with all chess videos, pretty much across the board....  If you're going to spend hours and hours recording and uploading hours and hours of chess videos, spend a few dollars on a decent microphone!

Pawnpusher3

Ok, the top three commentators on youtube are:

1. Kingscrusher: (He is a FIDE CM, which is higher than Jerry [chessnetwork] who is only an NM)

2. Thechesswebsite: He is a great player, and gives excellent commentary.

3. Chessnetwork: Very excellent commentary and always great analysis

JariIkonen

Jrobi this kingscrusher that.

I like em both, mostly follow kingscrusher because i love the sound of his voice.

My 2 cents, in this matter and all other matters.

If something sux so bad, then stop whining and do it better! :D

Indeed French speakers living in Canada and in Belgium say that French people from France have a distinctive "French" accent.
