does this site "really" have 10000000 players?

I used to run and Yahoo group so I have "some" idea how misleading this can be. by the time you factor in those who join more than once, join but never become active or are active for a few weeks or months, have motives other than playing chess or have "life" situations that prevent them from being active, that number begins to dwindle rapidly.if the data base has never been purged I would bet that the true number is less than 200,000,0

The number on the front page is the number of accounts. I assume that is unclosed accounts. That would include people with multiple accounts that haven't been caught yet and a number of accounts that haven't logged in for a while.

The better metric would be the online now one but it would need to be sampled probably hourly over a few weeks to get any meaningful numbers.

I'm sure the site could create, or already has a query that would return a count of all members active over the past month that may even be more meaningful.

Yeah, I'm sure they have their estimates, but higher numbers are better publicity of course.

200K active members may be a good guess, I don't know.
