does using marijuana before a chess game make you a better or worse player?

No studies have been conducted on this. You can be the first one and find out. Do not forget to correctly use the scientific method.

My guess is that anything that interferes with concentration would be bad. On the other hand, when I was in grad school in chemistry at IIT, I remember a fellow grad student who smoked marijuana often, including when he was aligning components of atom-smashing machines. His lab was in the basement - the fraction of a millimeter swaying of the building above ground could throw off the alignment! Somehow he got his streams aligned, he didn't blow us up and went on to get his Ph.D.

I had a buddy who played stoned and beat IM Soulman (name has been slightly modified) over the board in a tourney... my bud was rated around 2100 uscf.

have you thought of experimenting on yourself to find the answer first hand ? sorry that question was very unfair in hindsight.

your rating will go down to 420. See what I did there?
Best time to play some chess... man.

You would be surely mistaken on that. A lot of studies have been taken on the ergotropic qualities of mary-Jane. Perhaps not specifically on chess but many studies have been done on performance during tests. The general consensus is that memory can be accessed the easiest if it is in the same state of mind as to when the information was absorbed. Another result was that people on weed tend to not care and tend to give up easily. So there is truth in the train stoned play stoned method. But how many stoner will continue their chess study when high. Maybe counting birds is more interesting....

Also it's not very bad for you. Definitely safer than most legal substances, by a long shot.
