Does your heart race during rapid games?

Yes, I do have general anxiety issue, but I'm amazed how recently I find I can literally feel my heart beating when I get down to 5 mins left during a tight rapid endgame.  Am I alone here??

I'm the same, royalsport4. I look upon it as a good thing.

I always get nervous before starting a rapid game, and when the heart gets beating so hard I can feel it, I am able to focus better, probably through more blood being pumped to the brain.

Even magnus heart beats if he is 5 min down in rapid.....so just chill😁😁

Mind you, throwing up over the board would be a good way to escape from a losing position. Worth a try.

But seriously, can you guys literally feel your heart pounding?  Play a game and report back!

My heart is OK, but some part of me is pounding.

never with rapid, maybe with ultra-bullet

I don’t play speed chess but I defiantly get a rush when I can see a kill coming. Is that why we all keep coming back?

My heart does beat a lot, I think it’s why I’m still alive.

Some time ago this used to happen, and I thought it not to ne a good thing as I am getting on in years.   Though it will happen if I play blitz or anything faster than15/10, for which I have to be well rested.

I don't even know, I'm too busy concentrating to notice usually.

Play longer games grin.png or enjoy the rush!

I play chess on a step machine while wearing a heart rate monitor. My heart rate increases about 10-15 minutes once I start playing chess happy.png

Yes I feel it too but only when I play very well. Probably it's a way for the body to send blood to the brain.

No.....especially because I don't want to lose my rapid rating...

I tend to find that I get more nervous during a critical moment (over the board classical chess). Sometimes, even though I'm winning, I literally feel sick because of the suspense/pressure. Don't ask, I'm weird xD

No. Not online anyway. Because Carlsen said one of his key things was to keep very calm, so I try to copy? At much lesser level, of course. Once I used to get Very intense and emotion during play, but too much of that will leave you a wreck. So I taught to be very calm. A good idea is to just focus on making good, solid move. Not just on winning? And don't worry about clock loss. Better to lose by clock... in good position... than scrape a win by luck. Ivanchuck once lose something like 5 games on clock during a candidate tournament, for example.

I also can feel my heart pounding when playing a tense game over the board. Online i don't have that.
Mostly it will fade away during the game or tournament.

Like most things, you can improve with practice. I can completely relate to the heart pounding thing from shorter time controls. 5 minutes isn't much time at all. However, playing bullet/blitz is even more nerve-wracking. Even unrated practice might help you not feel as anxious. What is a 5 minute endgame if you can play an entire game in blitz? It helps with confidence. I still understand your point though. I play blitz (never got into bullet really much), but I still get worked up at times if there is just 5 minutes on my clock or something shorter than I'd prefer.
