Ok  .......  .

DirtyPlayer said he got a foolproof method. Now say your losing the game. And mate in 7. Get up and then ask your opponent to get up ask him did he smell that and tell him you want to ask him something . Just get him up and ask something. Then ask him does he see mate in 7. ok great see where he was going with this. Tell him your going to lose and all you have to is make these moves and game over.

Now go back and sit for 2 seconds.

Yell out Arbiter he got help with this game. He stood up and got help with mate.

So what Arbiter if it was me he still got help with the game.

I win by default.

Pretty clear case for the flare guns again....

If you're new to tournament or club play, sure.  But if you've been playing for awhile you should know better.

Elubas

There are some rare occasions I might say it. Like when a person seems like he planned an in-between move and I think he might have forgotten that he won't be able to meet it that way because my move is a check (this happened once, I wanted to make sure he knew; my queen was on c7, his king was on h2, but there were lots of pieces cluttered on the board). But it would have to be almost a whisper. It could be argued there is never a time to say it as well (after all, if they play an illegal move because they didn't know they were in check, he gets 2 minutes taken from his clock I believe Smile).

Like with playing on very late, I probably wouldn't do it myself very often, but I'm not particularly annoyed if my opponents do.

waffllemaster

Hmm, seems a bit rude, but if you're whispering it on your time I guess that's fine.  I woudln't want you to say anything to me while I'm thinking, and if you did it a couple of times I'd consider complaining to the TD heh.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

I might say check, if I were hustling a street hustler, and if it was sort of a turning point move. But I might say all sorts of other stuff too, none of which is really fit for a tournament game.

waffllemaster

When playing a street hustler it's well known that if you don't trash talk it's a penalty.  If you continue to not trash talk you may be forfeited lol.

"Check"   throw him to the ground and do search like your a cop.

Have you ever licked a piece before you lost it?

When you win your opponents queen do you say you love her?

Do you talk  to your opponents pieces and say they going down hard?

Do you take your shoes off and scratch your feet and adjust your opponents pieces?

AlCzervik

I would not have responded to that at all! Haha

It's odd to me that you would call it outright rude, as it's such a minor thing. There have been times where I didn't know I was in check right away (very rarely), although I found out pretty quickly; but in some cases it would have even helped me. There are still some class B-ish players that occasionally have said it to me, and it's generally not disruptive since it's quiet, and plus, when someone is making their move you're generally not deep in thought; you're simply wondering what the move is going to be. I could see people not liking this of course, but it is strange people feel so strongly about it that they use the word rude. I guess I am better able to see what you mean when I think about a rook endgame or something where the defending side is trying to check a million times Smile

So it seems it's good to err on the side of caution and just not say it because some people get ticked off by that sort of thing.

I think they see you coming a mile away. You would look way to relaxed in what many would see as a complicated situation. And a street hustler should know to always come out on the plus side of every situation. Also they would not be quick to respond if they are smart. They stick to plan and keep it hidden at all cost. And they want to rerun the same routine over and over again.

I would find it rude that my opponent assumes I'm so blind in the position that I haven't noticed a certain move gives check.  Short of a time scramble, I can't imagine not seeing a move gives check.  Perhaps I had planned an inbetween move further back, but as the position comes closer surely I've noticed, and pointing out the error in calculation is rude.  If I blundered you don't need to remind me.

Anyway you made it sound as if you wait for them to reach for a piece (how else would you know they're looking at an inbetween move).  So if you said it on my time, I would find it rude.  If I'm going to make an illegal move, let me make it and then point it out, or claim the extra time... e.g. don't call me stupid until I've done something stupid :p

If you talked to me for any reason on my time, multiple times, I see no reason not to get the TD involved, it's very poor sportsmanship to distract the opponent repeatedly.

waffllemaster

In club games I don't mind, and as Estragon said sometimes it's just part of the friendly trash talking.  In casual blitz games I've missed a check now and then, and I don't find it rude when they see me reach for a piece and remind me.

@royalbishop you give these guys too much credit. For the most part, they face fairly weak players all day long (they're usually maybe 1900 or so), and it's not that easy to just look at a random chess player at a chess tournament and guess if they play in the open section.
