Don't you think it's a bit silly to play E4 ?

Yes, after 1.d4 the e file Bishop is loosed and the pawn on d4 does not block the Queen or light square Bishop. (Unlike the silly move 1.e4)

I like 1. f3, here bishop, even better than 1. d4, getting the dark-squared bishop freed-up, and not exposing the king on the c1-h6 diagonal. What do you all think?

I dislike you, but I agree with this statement.

Wait a second, did you said "apart from Sicilian"? But Sicilian is the most common opening in the world!

And I'm not using hyperbole.

You should meet our resident pawn collector.  This could get interesting ...

DA QH1??? HORRORS! Don't bring out the queen too early if you want to protect your girlie...

ChessPlayinDude47

You do want to protect your girlie, don't you?... Hmm?

Hee hee hee!

Well, I think here(at chess960), f3 then e4 is better.

Anyway, at normal, both e4 and d4 is good.

(I checked it and found that 1.Nf3 is the best before.)

E4 leads to a lot of problems if you do not knot the other defenses of the black , however, C4 is better because it guarantees you a safe game.

Perhaps the strongest evidence for d4's superiority is that it's the move preferred by all 3 of the top chess engines (Stockfish, Komodo, Houdini) when letting them think on the opening position for several hours/days/weeks.

To put it simply: 1.e4 is so popular in low level simply because when people learn chess it is the easiest way for someone teaching them how to play in the opening to justify the battle for the center. For the obvious reasons.

Then these players start to develop, and by being humans they simply build on their past experiences and games so that they actually learn faster. This justifies that they are focusing more on 1.e4 and are probably not even willing to change and try 1.d4. (How many of us can actually devote to chess as much time as we want?) Hence, they have the illusion that 1.d4 is a "positional" move and live happily in their own fantasy world. Well, apart from Sicilian, I think that 1.e4 is the positional move. But whatever. You are convinced anyway.

The fact of the matter is that with 1.d4 if White wants to push Black to a super aggressive line, he can do so in a much bigger percentage of openings compared to 1.e4.

-The real fantasy is the one you live in. There are no "positional" moves. Some moves lead to open positions with many tactics (i.e e4 c5 Nf3 d6 d4,etc.)  others lead to more closed positions with slow maneuvering (i.e.d4 d5 c4 c6,etc.) . All good moves are made to benefit the position in some way (tactical or strategical) so what on earth are positional moves?

I play C4 because it is explosive. (Ben Finegold)

chess for begginers... first lesson take the center with pawns e4 and d4 accomplish this, we can say that those are the best options but d4 is for more positional play and also it leads to close positions if you like that its ok, e4 its more agressive we all remember the great fisscher that for me was even better than kasparov always used to play this, he never even try d4, c4 take center but is not that good, f4 its interesting but risky, g4 and b4 are not usual, you can go to different lines and put your opponents in a line that they dont know but remember that those moves are also not very good for you h4 and a4 im not going to even bother explaining how bad that is... it actually depends on your style, e4 your right, a lot of players respond with sicilian or french but d4 its the same, almost everyplayer respond with kings indian defence or slav
