draw etiquette

During a game today after I had taken 16 pts worth of material from my opponent, and was 1 move away from checkmate, my opponent asked for a draw. When I declined he asked again for a draw. In chat I pointed out that it was checkmate in 1 move, and he cursed me then began continuously requesting a draw. He did this for about 5 minutes throwing invectives at me the whole time. With about 3 seconds left on his clock he finally attacked my king, which I took immediately, then he moved a pawn and I mated him with a queen/bishop battery. My feeling is that there was no reason on my part to accept the draw, and if he wanted out of the game he should have either resigned, or finish the game. Would love to hear opinions on this. Thanks.

You did nothing wrong, the opponent probably wants mercy from you. Just wait for their clock to run out or wait for a move.

Same thing happened to me last night. It’s just poor sportsmanship when people try to offer a draw in losing positions to protect their ELO.

Just take your loss and learn from it.
