there have been multiple occasions where I was in a big lead and suddenly the game ends in a draw for some reason. It's not because of repeated maneuvers. does anyone know why this might happen?

Depends really. You should link to examples.

 

Most likely explanation is that you ran out of time and your opponent didn't have sufficient material left to mate. Possible that you stalemated your opponent too. Also, don't forget, it is repeated positions, not maneuvers so that could be the case.

That was a stalemate. It was white's move and there was no legal move. So a draw.

thanks for the explanation. doesn't seem right that a losing side can back themselves into a corner to avoid a loss.

You LET him back himself into a corner. When you're up by that much material, it's really questionable that the game ended in a stalemate.
