Isn't South Jersey swarming with shoobies and Bennies, though? Wouldn't we need a more quiet venue, especially if we want to play chess outdoors?

Sounds expensive.  How 'bout just a bunch of chessboards and coolers full of beer at a park?

 Sounds good!...

The fun part is just meeting each other, so I don't care where it is.

Bahamas would be nice...

The Bahamas would be nice :D

But what  richie_and_oprah says about reality, I guess that might suck after a while, but with good friends, it might not suck. I know a few people on this site who have really good friends that they met on this site.

Avatar of Kernicterus

That's why it's important to have a tournament or some other backdrop of chess excitement apart from just meeting...so that no matter what, at least that other thing was done!

Avatar of Kernicterus

hmm...what's that?

Avatar of -MICKEY-

Oh wait I wasn't suggesting no chess, that would be silly. I was just saying that the best part is meeting people from the site. Otherwise we would just be playing a HUGE disconnection-free Live Chess game.

Listen, if people really wanted to meet and be good friends they would be doing that already...and they aren't, mostly.

Why, do you suppose?  What the old man would call the "pussification of America?"

Avatar of Kernicterus

eh, I've met two of my dearest friends ever on the internet...luckily one was already in the same city at that time so it made it easy to hang out.  I'm not as pessimistic as I guess I've grown up with the internet meeting up culture and it offers exactly what real encounters offer...possibility, and frequently nothing interesting.  That's life...that's people.

Plus, I don't really have any fantasy of the people on Chess.com...I mean I don't know who does...it would be enough surprise if someone turned out to...um...dress well and comb their hair.    And yeah...I would expect to spend a good 10 minutes laughing about Beastie and complaining about what I don't like on the site...etc.

I guess I visualize something like an out of town soccer tournament.  Meet up as a group, maybe try to stay in the same hotels...arrange to have dinners as a group after our tournament rounds and just talk about our games, our day, our thrill at how small the globe has become!

Avatar of bigpoison

Our thrill at how small the globe has become!?  Yowsa.  Sure does make it hard to hide.

Hey, the old man to which I was referring is my own dear ol' da'.  Um, I'm not sure where the confusion came from.

Avatar of kissinger

well, chess.com is international, why not meet up on a different continent.....or not...perhaps its best not to meet some of the chess.com members....many appear to have  "issues"   .........just thinking outloud...

Is anyone going to this World Open thing?  Where is it being held?  I guess we can all just announce when we're going to events a month in advance and whoever wants to join up and connect can do so?

Avatar of Kernicterus

Darn.  If it were a couple months later, I'd be on it.  I'm unrated. :(  Are you rated, Anthony?  And is it always in Philly?

Avatar of TheOldReb

I sure would like to go to the world open ( and several other big US events ) before I leave this world. I plan to try harder to go to such events when I move back to the USA. I would also like to play the US, NY and National Opens as well.

Avatar of ozzie_c_cobblepot

I have played in Philly, at the Adams Mark hotel, but it wasn't at the World Open. I don't remember the name though... any help?

Why do they call it a skittles room?

Avatar of Crazychessplaya

There is nothing on the etymology of "skittles room" as it relates to chess on the web. One possible hint could be given by the fact that while it is a variant of bowling, it is played with wooden pins (skittles) and balls. As you know, bowling is not exactly an intellectual sport. Thus the tonque-in-cheek allusion to the fact that the games in a "skittles room" are really "woodpushing", not real chess.
