I play with friends around the world while traveling and need multi-day games. Why can't I play duck chess or other varieties with these time limits? Seems like a pointless restriction. Is there something I'm missing?
None of the variants in the Variants server have daily time controls. You could ask over there if that is ever planned.
For regular daily games, the live variants (which doesn't include duck Chess) aren't supported at this time. The other variants from the variants server are based on completely different code and I think they're unlikely to ever be supported but the main chessboard code.
I guess it's possible if a particular variant became extremely popular, but my understanding is that the variants there are a very tiny fraction of games played. Daily itself is a tiny fraction of games played on site as well.
It's also likely that some variants, with long time controls, might have a much more massive advantage for one side, which will likely become evident in daily time controls.
