Einstein called chess a waste of time, what do you think?

A more petty and malicious reply I cannot recall on these forums in a decade.

In a heated moment one guy on the forums tried the same line of attack. He deleted those posts later and privately messaged me an apology, which I accepted, and we both moved on.

I haven't had any alcohol in, maybe a little over a year now, so that part of it isn't hurtful, but the obvious malicious intent is a bit breathtaking.

A bit ironic that I chastised you for engaging with him... should have followed my own advice.

WAY TO GO YO NO MO ACLO ! You know I mean it! 👍

Give it a rest.

These unnecessary jabs are the things that belie your narrative constantly.

Someone *not* full of bile would leave off the first sentence.

Einstein had a lot of hobbies and interests. It is reported that the man was a philanderer.

Thus, if someone were to ask the question, "Is Chess a Waste of Time, Compared to Sex?" the answer would be, "Yes, but afterwards, No, because chess is stimulating to the mind."

I could have gotten a PhD in physics, but having to explain to laymen that my life involved Leptons, Sleptons, Winos, and Zinos would have been a stretch.

Einstein described photographers as "licht affen" Madam Marfona recalls.

Yes, chess is a waste of time. They do not provide any benefit to the player. There is no financial gain from it unless you are a grandmaster , and even then most of them have normal jobs. It does not make you more intelligent. The only credible evidence I’ve seen of chess benefitting the brain is when the old people keep playing it, it could be slowing down the natural mental deterioration that comes with age. On the other hand chess arguably does have some negative effects on the player.

It is an alienating, often anti-social hobby. Most people do not like playing chess, don’t know how, or if they know how to play it doesn’t mean they find it interesting to talk about it.

Another negative effect of chess is that it could be putting the mind of the player into the proverbial “box”. If people should think “outside the box” chess literally limits your thinking to the 64 squares. Drawing analogies for life from chess does not work, since chess is a very bad metaphor for life.

For example chess is a zero sum game. Life is not.

Chess is a struggle between almost equivalent opponents, giving slight benefit to the player of white. Life does not have to be a struggle against other people. So, chess trains the player to perceive everyone who does not agree as an opponent.

This one is very important. Chess is an open information game where there are no unknowns. All the events in chess are within the known parameters set by rules and the ability to see the positions of pieces. Life is almost the opposite. Life has and is structured around known unknowns, and unknown unknowns.

Chess could make the player paranoid. I think this is something most regular chess players who play and interact with real people know. Almost every chess player I knew or know in life are people who constantly suspect that someone is conspiring against them, that someone always has an ulterior motive. Chess players are also often just contrarian. That is they always want to object to something even if it is an insignificant thing.

Of course the above are just my observations based on what I read about chess players, from observing friends or family who liked to play chess, and articles about chess and mental health.

I thought it was too good to be true, that you were refraining from trolling. You've managed it before for a month or so, several times. You can't post the stuff you just posted here and expect others to accept it with a smile. If they do that then fine but you can't expect it. It's real trolling you're doing. Not pretend. Not playing.

I feel like you don't have any mirrors in your house wink.png.

Yeah, that's a no.  You were blocked for not following the Covid thread guidelines (blocked twice I might add, after I gave an amnesty and unblocked everyone), but if even if that were not in place, I have no desire to talk to someone who goes off the rails constantly.  There's not a thing you can impart to me at this point I have not already gleaned from your body of posts.

Or perhaps several opinions but it was mainly due to factual disagreements. I was once blocked on Facebook because (I was told) I was irrational. That means that the person couldn't follow my thinking and wasn't inerested in explanations. He wouldn't have followed them either.

This is why you were also blocked from the Covid thread (which means a general block):

Which notably occurred after this direct warning a page earlier that a block would be the result of exactly what you posted:

Read back a handful of pages from page 148, and maybe it will come back to you.

Ironically, you blocked me before I blocked you, lol.  You don't remember that either, I see.

Exactly. I wrote that to see if you still don't like opinions which are different from yours. You find all sorts of excuses to pretend they are not valid, shouldn't be heard, bad for people etc. I suppose you'd make a good Russian President. You could get people to throw other people through windows too.

You were blocked for going off topic and attacking other posters after a warning to everyone was posted to cut out that very trend.  Not for your opinion.  Try again.

Your excuses don't age well.
