Einstein called chess a waste of time, what do you think?

As well as being quite clever he wasn't quite perfect. Some historians consider him to have been a liar. If so then his comments about how much he played chess might not be all that reliable.

I think he was  a Moron.

That's a Controversial Opinion.

Really, [removed -- VP] him.

Its an opinion but...he didn't have to say that.

Einstein's observation is unfortunately quite accurate: "...the chess playing of a master ties him to the game, fetters his mind and shapes it to a certain extent so that his internal freedom and ease, no matter how strong he is, must inevitably be affected."  Chess, especially on the higher levels, demands hours upon hours of study and concentration during play.  It is much like music: the more you practice and study, the better you become.  This should not be, however, to the exclusion of everything else.

I agree. We should work 24 hours a day. Who needs sleep anyway

Play chess or troll internet forums. You choose.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I like chess. :) So to me it's not a waste of time. Different people different preferences. Intellect really is no factor here.

I like chess, BECAUSE it is a waste of time!

It's a bit of a foolish statement because people who enjoy chess don't feel the same way. It's like someone says playing cards is a waste of time but people like to play cards. I could say to him - making up formulas and studying physics is a waste of time and see what he replies. He would have probably been a good chess player with his mental skills it's kind of surprising that he disliked it.

Chess is the most logical game out there, what a stupid thing to say

To sum up some relevant past posts by several people:

Einstein never said that chess is a waste of time.

Yeah, chess may be a waste of time, but then again, most of life can be described in the same way. It's not up to others to determine what is and isn't a waste of time.

Theory of Relativity is THE waste of Time.

I guess there was a shaving cream called Chess at that time.

You better never use GPS then.

1) so, you agree that Einstein's theory has no other use except it's alleged use in GPS?

2) about it's alleged use in GPS: there is no need of Einstein's theory or even satellites for GPS. US was running LORAN without satellites or relativity.  For about half a century, US used ground towers(like cell phone towers) for their LORAN. US then released this LORAN for general public with a name change(calling it GPS).  Lot of lies are peddled by authorities about this sort of technologies because they have a military use as well.

3) Relativity is just a time pass theory with no real use(assuming it is correct). Relativity has mind-bending ideas like time dilation, space contraction ...etc. So, it provides a nice playing field for all theoretical physicists to come up with imaginative theories. Most of such theories have their origin in Relativity.

4) Einstein put down chess because then chess world champion Laskar was opposing and refuting Einstein's Relativity theory.

5) I congratulate you for managing to post without abusing me but since you are incapable of discussion without abusing your opponets, I think this will be my last reply to you on this topic.

So how many of those have u learnt with the time u (clearly) don’t spend on chess?

Let me put it this way: Relatively speaking, playing chess is one of the most reasonable ways of wasting time. I would like to waste time by trying para-gliding, but it involves risking my life.
