en passant étiquette when opponent doesn't know about the rule

Screw 'em life is full of hard lessons. Tell them to Google the rules as you crush them.

MonkeyH

When you play a rated match OTB it's the obligation of the opponent to know the rules. If he doesn't accept just call the arbiter/judge and he will sort it out.

When playing not rated it's good sportmanship to let the player take the move back.

What gives people?

This thread was effectively dead yesterday...I think it just made hot topics now.

But, chess is a game. How in the world can you display sportsmanship in a game?

Syd_Arthur

Well, thanks everyone for a lively discussion on a topic no one was interested in until two hours ago...

But I think all of the viewpoints have been covered for now.

So with that I'll wrap it up.

No more comments will be accepted on this thread...for the next seven days.

Macer 75, can the trophy be requested in orange?

Syd_Arthur

On second thought, please don't answer that.

All depends on who you ask. Some people call it a game, other sports and other people call it art.

If the game is in an official tournament, then tough luck, the person playing in a tournament should know ALL the basic rules of chess: including en passant and castling. There's no excuse for that if you're paying money to play in a tournament and don't know the basic rules of the game.

However if it is a casual game with beginners (and it has happened alot), I let them chose whether or not to take back their previous move. But once I've made the aware of it, then there's no excuse for not seeing it as an option when deciding on their moves going forward.

Ok, FMnobodyreally, and anyone else who's even thinking of commenting on this forum...I created this thread, and as the creator, I have a God-given, and U.S. Constitutionally guaranteed right to KILL IT!!!

FMnobodyreally, your comment was not accepted on this thread.

Resistance is futile.

Akatsuki64

Tell them this: If you don't know the rules you shouldn't be playing.

Then crush them.

If anything, the US Constitution would rather prevent you from killing it if people wish to post nonsense inside.

But of course such matters are settled by chess.com ToS.

I am unsure what God's opinion is on the subject.

Syd_Arthur

@Irontiger,

Will you be sending the trophy on the variant, or should I discuss it with Macer75?

nobodyreally

What do you mean not accepted? It's there, LMAO.

If you really want to kill the thread ask chess.com to shut it down.

Don't just say so, DO IT.

btw. Resistance is NEVER futile.

See, you want the kill the thread, but you keep posting.

Bad boy!

Then again, en passant is actually quite silly.

I cant think of a good reason why it exists. Anyone?

Why does a bischop move diagonally and not orthogonally or hop around?

You don't know?

Exactly!
