You should be polite and explain the rule.
en passant étiquette when opponent doesn't know about the rule

terahammer it is to prevent closed positions from people just abusing the two space pawn rule to avoid opening their position
Thanks!

Then again, en passant is actually quite silly.
I cant think of a good reason why it exists. Anyone?
Why does a bischop move diagonally and not orthogonally or hop around?
You don't know?
Exactly!
Lol diagonally is orthogonally.
Seems you are the one who don't know ;-)

@FMnobodyreally,
I didn't ask, but I have a feeling that asking staff to shut down this thread would disqualify me from winning at "kill the thread".
I chose this thread to kill because:
1) I wouldn't want to kill anyone else's thread if they weren't playing.
2) It was languishing anyway...until a few hours ago!
Now it looks like I'll have to start tabulating votes!

Really?
The line segments AB and CD are orthogonal to each other.
Explain further, please.
AND, you completely missed the point I was making.

TeraHammer,
Orthogonally, I believe, refers mostly to goemetric relationships regarding right angles.
Therefore, more in relation primarily to the movement of rooks.
But FMnobodyreally and Terahammer, en passant is a pawn move, so please don't hijack my thread with references to other pieces.

En général, en passant n'est pas dans le vocabulaire d'échecs de la jeune et inexpérimenté échecs junior. Comprenez-vous français?

No, I meant "tu." And considering you don't speak French, you can't make assumptions about what I was saying, translate it if you must .

Oh, the vitriol!!!
This thread is getting hot!!!!!
Frankly (no pun intended), you'd simply state what you mean in English, as I have answered your question... I don't comprehend French.
As the originator of this non-existent thread, and as an exceptionalist, United States Citizen ( in the great little town of Terrapin Station), I hereby make a Declaration!!! The Official Language of this thread (even though it is gratefully deceased)...is English!!!
Close this thread, darn it. Keep getting alerts.
