En passant applies to all pawns.
En passant in chess.com

If so, and you are talking about the advance of the g pawn past your pawn on f3, en passant doesn't apply here.

Thanks for everyones answers. But I must be dumb for not getting this. So let me tell you the exact positioning of the pawns in my game. I was white and had a pawn on c6 attacking Blacks pawn on b7. Instead of black taking my pawn on c6 which would have been as just as good a move for me as me taking his pawn on took his pawn on B7, Black advanced his pawn on from B7 to B5. I though is an passant because he advanced his pawn 2 spaces avoiding my attack or capturing my pawn. I though this was a simple rule and I even went to the thread that TheGrobe posted and still can not figure this out. I think I may have to resort to checkers if I can't grasp something I thought I always understood. Any feedback much appreciated. Thanks

It's explained in that thread.
Yes, it really is very simple. If your pawn is on the fifth rank and your opponent moves his pawn two spaces you can take it en passant. Your pawn was on the sixth rank so no en passant. Simple.
En passant was invented so that a pawn on the fifth rank doesn't lose its attacking ability when the opponent's pawn moves two squares. Your pawn on the sixth rank had not lost its attacking ability and was actually attacking the black pawn. En passant does not apply in that case.

LongIslandMark.....that was my understanding as well. But DrCheckevertim explained that my pawn had to be on he 5th rank, not the 6th. LongIslandMark, are you agreeing with me because when I tried to recapture B7, the software would not allow it?. If DrCheckevertim is correct, which I now am thinking he is, because the software programmers should have allowed me to capture the pawn on B7 after it advanced to B5 which was not the case.
So it is one of two things.
1.) sofware glitch
2.) My ingnorace
Can we get definitive answer on this question. I now think the good Doctor is right. Just embarrasing that for 35 years, I had it wrong.
Thanks again everyones quick response. I truly appreciate it.
God Bless

Thanks everyone. I trult appreciate the quick feedback. Tomorrow I am upgrading to the top premium level so I can start improving my game.

Definitive answer: your ignorance. The Doctor is right.
It's not your fault. The problem lies with how most people learn chess; from others who may not know the correct rules.
Simplest is to say: You can only capture e.p. with your pawn IFF (yes logical iff) BOTH (1) your pawn is on the 5th if white, 4th on black AND (2) your opponent's immediate last move was moving a pawn 2 squares forward, ending up next to your pawn. Only under these circumstances, and no others, can you take e.p. on your move.

Thanks everyone. I finally and completley understand the rule. And DrCheckevertim, your issustrations using the chess board are fantastic and how by clicking the "play" button, you make things so easy to understand. Is that sofware part of the premium package as I decided to upgrade. Quite honestly, I don't know where to even start because there are so many tools available to improve the game that it is a bit overwhelming to me. I am going to start a post and try to get feedback as how to best utilize my time. I am out of work on disbaility now and can easily put 5 hours a day into practicing. I just have no clue where to even get started. Even though I am going to start a post, feel fee for anyone on this thread to share your wisdom. And LongIslandMark, I could have used the name YonkersBob so it looks like we are neighbors. Peace

Now all you need to understand is to never resign, no matter what.
Don't listen to him. Resign as quickly as you can. Especially if you play me.

You don't need the premium package to make those diagrams. Just click on the chessboard icon, above the textbox where you're typing (all the way on the left).
Good luck with your practicing - I believe most people will recommend that first you do lots of tactics, and learn the simple pawn and rook endgames. Also look through master games (about 10-15 mins per game), and whenever you run across a move you don't understand, try to figure out why they made that move.
With premium, you can use the tactics trainer as much as you want. I recommend going slowly on those tactics (do untimed).

Also remember, if study starts to feel overwhelming, or not fun... that means take a break.
I was just in a chess game on chess.com when the opponent
used his pawn in an en passant move, yet no matter how I tried, the software would not allow me to capture his pawn using the en passant rule. Does en passant only apply to the pawns on the D & E file? The pawn I tried to capture was on the B file.
thanks
