Environment and chess.

I was thinking about this few days ago, and I realized that environment affects my chess skills very much.

Starting with live online chess and colors, green, brown, blue and gray, every color of board and color of web site affects me differently.

But even greater effect is OTB. Do I play alone in room 1v1, do I play when 5 people is watching my game and i try to be smart, and lose in miniature, do I play on tournament where everyone around me is playing chess, and I feel stupid and like I don't belong there, do I play inside or outside in park or nature, where I feel fired up and relaxed, and really in the mood for chess?

Also the chess sets. Do I play with tiny portable boards, or on huge boards with abstract pieces...

I am alone in thinking that this stuff can affect your chess skills in smaller or greater amount?

Absolutely right. I found out that any kind of background noise is a distraction when solving chesstempo.com tactics problems. I need quiet in the room then. Not so for casual games with the Chessmaster, here I am reasonably used to all kinds of distractions.

Once had an IM offering me a draw since he couldn't stand the sound of the air conditioner. It's part of the chess education to shout out things like that but I still feel uneasy if surrounded by spectators.

I always repent when I make moves while my girlfriend is in my nest...
