EQ vs IQ : More reasons to ban chess

good lord azangatanhang , you don't learn to manage time by wasting it, chess has nothing to offer in terms of preparing anyone for anything

Steve, how many friends was that?  I am trying to work out how many newspapers have to be printed.

Sounds like you've got a low E.Q.maybe ? find me a good EQ test and I'll find out and you're just jealous.of what ? I like my friends and family and seem to do fine in any of my RL social circles. What exactly should I be jealous of ? Is there some secret EQ world championship that I missed ?

It was a joke Steve!

Two negatives make a positive.  What happens when you have a joke about a joke?

The sham is that the duck-man is on a chess site raging against chess players.  Freudian, very Freudian.  Projection is a hell of a thing.

xming, not allowed to talk about sex here, even if it is ducks doing it.

chess shouldn't be banned. Chess is a game that teaches people to manage their time, and will obviously be vital in real life.

EQ is totally not a sham. A sham is the idea that you have to be a brainiac to have a good job. People with high EQ tend to work harder ,are team players and communicate better which is why the world is not run by chess players. Chess players are far more likely to work at Wallmart to keep their addiction going than have a good job.

Your argument is now invalid ipswithmatt.

Don't see how, I wasn't making any argment

eastyz

More chess players should join real life.

EQ is mostly a sham, in case you didn't know.

Nature isn't fair: some are born with higher mental abilities and develop those into higher intelligence than others. It doesn't make them better or more worth as human beings, but it sure helps them succeed in a society where intelligence is needed for most of the high paying jobs.

But what do we tell those unfortunate enough to not be part of that group ?

We present a sham so they can feel better about it: intelligence isn't all it's cracked up to be, it says nothing about social skills, emotional and social skills are much more valuable, let's forget about the almost meaningless IQ and talk about that mysteriously vague EQ instead.

And while we present that sham, the less intelligent labor with 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet, while the truly smart enjoy a high paying job.

But God forbid we let them know that, no let's pat them on the head instead and tell them how well they're doing EQ wise.

The shamiest part of EQ is the fact that it isn't quantifiable in any sort of meaningful way. Recognizing that you feel a certain way, and why, are well and good, and a strong case could probably be made for why developing these are helpful when solving real-life problems. But since EQ has pretty much nothing useful to say when it comes to how happy/sad/angry/disappointed/etc. someone should feel in a given situation, its diagnostic potential is pretty limited.

Probably the best thing EQ can do for people is make them recognize that they have an emotional/irrational side to them (as does everyone) and that learning to deal with/understand this particular part of them will often come in handy when learning how to handle problems in the real world. But beyond this very broad outline, and perhaps some self-delusional reassurance that you referred to, it doesn't offer much else.

huh. then please tell me, why, in chess one must not waste time by playing useless moves and on the contrary, must grab opportunities. Also, chess is basically composed of strategy, which might help if someone chooses a political job

eastyz

Fkey, I was trying to link jealousy with intelligence but I see that I did not get very far.

eastyz

alanzhang, if you are good at checkmating political opponents, you have a future in politics.

When you are struggling for intelligence, I would have thought you take whatever comes your way.  This is all the duck's fault.

OK, duck, I read post 19.  If you are a prophet and a pastor then why don't you take your mission to a church somewhere?  Chess.com is not a church.  Would you recommend that chess players quit chess and just pray to some invisible desert god in order to be better people?  Same old story: The people who have empowered themselves through delusion beat up on other people in order to feel better about themselves.  Please, give us some of your prophecy.  Start with the end times if you don't mind.

I'm sorry, but if you're not crying after reading post #19, and the sacrifice therein, then you're estranged to EQCry
