Estimated # of unique chess games

I just came across something interesting in one of my chess books. The estimated total number of possible unique chess games is 10 to the 120th power: 1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 0

well it is solvable, and logic would say it is a draw, but proving that is a different matter.

The number of possible chess positions must be must be much much less, does anyone know waht this is. Because presumably if we could solve the positions then we could solve the game as a whole.
