Make positional assessments then formulate plans. Chess is all about active piece play, and Botvinnik played streemingly strange moves that were not only sound but objectively best. I understand where you're coming from: in real life someone could say something so absurd that you can't refute it in the moment due to sheer shock. An example of this is someone saying the earth is only 6,000 years old, then after getting your cool back mention how all scientists, carbon and radiometric dating, the geological record, fossil record, etc., and common sense in light of the evidence proving that it's actually billions.

All my life has been a battle against patzerism,on and off the board! The problem with patzerism is that although any sensible individual can tell that its arguments are wrong,it's really difficult for that same individual to disprove them! For example, when i play chess against masters, everything that my opponents play comes out as natural! But with patzers,i know that they almost always play ''crazy'' moves, but in the end i can't escape their ''madness''!!So you may say that ''mad'' players are strong in their game...but this is a curse for me because i face it in real life too!!I mean i often come across people who can't make strong arguments but i may end up feeling intimidated against them, although when i talk to hyperrational ones everything is ok!
Before you judge me superficially,
have in mind that i have a FR of 1700,Haha.
