Have I missed something? but I have lately been given matches where the other player is rated at 1600 (all of them are rated exactly 1600) but joined only a day ago and hasn't finished a daily game.   I've reported this but haven't got any response

When creating an account, a skill level is chosen, and that sets a default rating.

Do not report them. You can get banned for false reporting. It is because they get a default rating when they join.

The site does not ban people for reporting other members.

Fetoxo
Really? I think it does.

Well, Lichess used to do it. They warn ppl that if they sent so many false reports, they would "report-ban" a user, that is, they would prevent the user from reporting in the future. Thats why this site is better, we don't have to type out long paragraphs explaining our theory just because WE feel someone has cheated. This seems to be suited towards those paranoid users who feel that when they lose a game, they feel the opponent is cheating.

I have finally seen one normal person in this club

Those fake ratings can explain Youtubers getting fake views, likes and subscribers.

Fake it, you make it.

Magic_of_youth

If you report abuse to staff, using the Support tool, and make false claims, that could result in being banned. Just reporting won't do it

Fetoxo
Okay, I accept

thanks all - didnt realise you start at 1600 - seems ridiculously high but whatever

Fetoxo
No, you do not always start at 1600. When you make an account, you can say what level you are. New to chess - 400 (it should be 100 but whatever). Beginner - 800. Intermediate - 1200. Advanced - 1600.
