LOL, I've only bee playing here a week and I already got my first accusation of cheating:"block this ugly b*****d he is using chess machine f*** u a*****e". Are there really 1189 players here who cheat so they can beat a 1042? Boy, the trash talk must get really vicious out here once you reach a near-master rating like 1500 or 1600.

I'm laughing so much right now. Boy I wish I was a master! My USCF is 1711 and I'm just a good blitz player for my rating, but no master I know has a blitz rating below 2000. The trash talk does get vicious and people are rude and quite often resort to cheating accusations to make themselves feel better. I once had a person tell me I was in a theoretical line of the dragon that lost a pawn and he/she ended up down a piece. They then resorted to a stream of vulgar profanity and accusations. The internet is not a place for nice/normal people anymore.

This made me laugh : ) thank you !! You wrote on the internet "the internet is not a place for nice/normal people anymore"....

I love it !! lol

Hello, I have just recently experienced a few of players who ( I won't mention names )  enter tournaments with much lower ratings than their playing ability.

In Live Chess I float around the 1150 to 1250 range, give or take. Recently I entered a tournament and was beaten hands down by a 989 rated player , followed by a 846 rated player who also had no trouble putting me down.

I'm no dummy , wasn't drunk or intoxicated in any way, and there is no way I can believe these "players" were honest about their ratings.

Has anyone else experienced this ? What are your thoughts ? I just withdrew from the tournament, it seemed to be pointless.

Extremely sorry to say this, but be aware that everybody has a rating floor about 200 points below their max rating, rounded down. So the 800 could be max 1099 and the 900 max 1199. Very high chance it is just your own poor play.

there was def no shortage of poor play in that game...so yeah, anything is possible, I posted right after the game, based on my gut instinct at the time which usually pretty spot on.

here is another example of this same type of thing , copy and pasted :

Has this happened to anyone else ? I entered a recent tournament and was placed in a 1201-1400 group. One of the players whom I won't name entered the group with a rating of 1219 ( the lowest in the group ) .

Quite quickly into the match I realized she was much stronger than a 1219 and  she proceeded to beat me hands down in both games. I found the overwhelming strength of her game to be a bit odd so I decided to check out her history.

I found  her rating was already up to 1627, only a week after starting the tournament !

About a week later I noticed  she had lost 16 consecutive games in 24hrs to get her rating back down to a 1232. This is obviously a direct manipulation of her own ratings in order to qualify for tournaments at a lower rating than she actually is !

Why would anyone do this ?

How can it be fun to "beat up" on a group of players who play at a much lower level than yourself ?

Obsessed with winning ? Obsessed with power ? Bored ? What is it ?

Anyway, she ruined the tournament for me............it's too bad, has anyone else had a similar situation ?

CMON PEOPLE DON'T BE STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS A FREAKING RATING FLOOR FOR EVERYBODY WHICH IS NO MORE THAN 299 POINTS LOWER THAN HIS OR HER MAXIMUM RATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PAY ATTENTION TO USCF RATING GUIDELINES, WILL YOU PLEASE?

From an article describing the USCF rating system:

A player’s rating floor is calculated by subtracting 200 points from the highest attained established rating after rounding to the nearest integer, and then using the floor at or just below. For example, if an established player’s highest rating was 1941, then subtracting 200 yields 1741, and the floor just below is 1700. Thus the player’s rating cannot go below 1700.

Ok so finally I decided to try another 5 min blitz tournament , thinking my last experience was a one off. Well guess what it wasn't !!

The very first player i played was rated 803, me 1187. I was very cautious due to my last experience. I lost. This person went on to win the tournament.

I checked the game archive and here it is : http://www.chess.com/home/game_archive?sortby=&show=live_blitz&member=MadKing9-0&page=1

to sum it up, starting March 29 , they lost 9 in a row against an 840,683,704,802,692,685,643,667,and a 715 rated player.

They then go on to win 12 of the next 14 games vs. a 1095, 860, 831, 1176, 1146, 1158, 1004, 861, 836, 1046, 1001, 1187 (me) and 1161.

This is a perfect example of FAKING A LOW RATING TO WIN !

So to all you who slammed me, insulted me and so on......go to the link I posted and check out this persons games archive.

Case closed.

Footnote : I just checked again and it seems  MadKing9-0 has now entered another losing streak. Must be another tournament coming up.

I dont claim to be the best player in the world, but I don't think there's much discernable difference between 1100 and 800 at blitz

This is sandbaggiing as clear as it could possibly be !! Come on !! look at it : purposely losing 9 in a row , 7 of those being 1 move games !! How can you not see that !?!?!

This is rating manipulation at its finest ! .

Nobody fakes a low rating, it's ridiculus and it doesn't make sense. You are confused  because you think that 900 rating in bullet chess means 900 in classical performance.  Accept your losses and don't underestimate. Moreover when you lose to lower rated players, give credit, instead of inventing new cheating philosophies.

Have a look at my latest opponent and tell me nobody fakes a low rating !

There's no point in accusing someone unless you have proof. The game archive looks strange and unusual with all those winning and losing streaks, but that's not enough proof for understanding whether a person is sandbagging or not. It's natural for a normal chess player to be inconsistent and have winning and losing streaks. Your opponent may have been sandbagging, but there's no proof (other than the game archive, which obviously isn't enough proof) that the player was really doing that.

Yes, it happens, everyone knows it happens. You were slammed because your OP wasn't a case of it.

I guess you missed it but my original post was exactly about this. Here is my opening line : Hello, I have just recently experienced a few of players who ( I won't mention names )  enter tournaments with much lower ratings than their playing ability.

one move games are aborted and don't count towards rating.

Wrong. In a Blitz tournament they are counted as a loss and you lose rating points.
